It's more or less the start of Day 009 by the time Dirk is finally out of the village, so we'll start there.
Day 009 Starting Square: XI.U.14 Ending Square: XI.Q.28 Duration: 8 hours General Search Results:
a handful of lemongrass
five handfuls of sugarberries
strange fish - medium-sized, oscar-type fish, but absolutely covered in bright red eyespot markings
eight handfuls of chickweed
Dirk doesn't find a good place to cross until he hits the airplane wing in square XI.R.20. Like the Pacairs alluded to, it's basically been turned into a shrine, elaborately decorated with both natural materials (woven hemp and twine hanging from the edges and threaded with fresh flowers) and assorted salvage (chairs bolted to the leading edge, metal scrap and fuselage skin elaborately welded together into a plinth at the far end). The wing acts as a sort of dam for the two branches of the huge river that meet there, helped along by an actual dam of logs and branches, which has significantly throttled the amount of water going downstream and its speed. Dirk can easily get to the other side of the river here or anywhere else downstream.
Having crossed the river, Dirk is able to keep going south until he hits the ocean, at which point he starts following the coast west. There's another river visible ahead through the deepening mangrove forest, but it looks pretty thin and easy to navigate from this distance.
