Steph can tell, based on the general outline of the coast and the position of the bay, that the crosshatch is somewhere very close to her current position, but it's hard to say where exactly without any definitive landmarks inland on the map itself. I'll say she makes a careful spiral pattern out and around the airstrip to try and triangulate its position...
...at which point she'll realize, as she periodically checks her map, that the crosshatch is following her. Apparently, she is the crosshatch.
Steph's adventure does show her something perhaps more interesting, though: As she wanders west on the side of the airstrip closest to the deeper forest, she'll see a set of fresh hoof tracks in the sandy soil and some scuffs on the trees at about waist-level. The tracks pace a lot near the border of the beach, then seem to disappear inland.
