Most of the noises are coming from the mechanical components of the machine itself, although she can trace a lot of the background electronic humming to somewhere underneath it, apparently through the floor.

Looking at the machine during the "flash" doesn't do much other than make Steph temporarily blind. The light is coming from somewhere behind the rotating arms, but that's all she can figure from the other side of it.
