There's a bend in the river here that's turning it north, and upriver, it's easy to tell that the higher elevation is making the currents stronger the further inland he goes. It doesn't look too deep, but it's still quite a broad river, and there are some muddy bits that obscure the bottom. Fish can be seen darting around in the murk.
Squalo's search for food quickly pays off when he finds a bundle of water chestnuts growing right by the shore. However, when he bends back upright after picking them, his fears of a predator might trigger when he sees the scaly body of a crocodile cruise past him downriver. It's easily ten feet long and its legs are just a little bit too gangly to be normal.
Squalo could theoretically continue following the river along the banks without too much difficulty - he still has 4 hours left before Day 001 to travel.
