Whatever these berries are, they are not tomatoes, made obvious as soon as Squalo tastes one of them. They're still kind of savory and sweet, but in a syrupy sort of way, like cold baked beans.
Squalo valiantly fights the crabs on the dead horse - and the crabs fight back. Though Squalo is more than a match for his terrestrial crustacean opponents, hauling and fending off the pile of agitated animals takes a significant amount of time, and by the end of it there's not a lot of horse left to salvage. He can get a few bones, hooves, and hide from it, but no usable scraps of meat.
His fight with the falling nest of crabs, on the other hand, goes a lot better. Their agitation lasts just long enough to chase him to a stray boulder that he climbs on top of and get poked at, and then they seem to think better of the whole thing and scatter.
