Squalo's thorough search through the sands of the beach, plus his addition of an SOS written on the ground with the very fancy branch he found, takes him a significant chunk of time. The SOS has been added to square IX.FF.15.
The river Squalo's been following turns to flow east-west, and on the northern banks the surrounding jungle grows increasingly thick and wild, with the river eventually turning again and disappearing into it. Squalo would be forced to start traipsing through this rougher terrain, significantly hampering his progress and visibility.
Squalo's observations would indicate that the ground is sloping steadily upwards the further north he goes. However, the thick, early morning fog obscures anything visible in the far distance, save what might be a shadowy bulk that could be clouds hanging over the trees. The flora in the jungle here is stratified, like a proper rainforest, and seem like they should be incredibly productive, but he'll have to sift through the undergrowth or pick through specific trees in order to find something recognizably edible. Counting the time spent looking around his starting area, Squalo could still have 5 hours left before Day 001.
