Search Requests

SEARCH REQUESTS

At game start, the map is completely unexplored and covered by a "fog of war" obscuring its features. New characters will be randomly dropped onto the island's shores; from there, to uncover tiles on the map and figure out more about where they are, search requests are required to document movement, attempt to uncover hidden materials and passages, discover or confront dangers, find old ruins and create new settlements, and potentially, solve puzzles related to the mystery of the island itself.

RULES AND GUIDELINES

  • Search requests are a required mechanic of this game. A search request for the current AC cycle must be submitted in order to pass AC without a strike.
  • Mistakes in search requests will never be penalized. Don't be afraid to eyeball a distance or make an approximate guess; if the math doesn't quite match up, or the path doesn't exist, I will offer alternate destinations and work with you in order to decide how the search request will resolve.
  • Search requests will rarely be immediately fatal. Unless your character is doing something intentionally reckless, I will do my best to offer paths of escape for any sudden dangers that arise.
  • You can be as precise or as vague as you want. If you want to exactly plot out the squares your character will travel through and search every IC day, that is totally fine. It's also fine to simply report that your character is staying in one place all month, or to give a starting point and a desired destination, with a general request to search a wide area. Just note that, the more vague you are in your request, the more I will extrapolate to fill in the blanks.
  • Retroactive/backdated search requests are allowed. They just can't be used for the current month's AC if they fall outside of the current month's AC period, or overwrite a previously submitted search request. Forward-dated search requests are also allowed as long as they fall within the same IC day that the request was posted (for example, if you post a search request on IC Day 30 morning, you can make that search request last for the entirety of IC day 30, not just the morning of).
  • Thoroughly searching a square, rather than just traveling through it, halves movement through that square. So if you choose to search every square along a path, you'll only travel half as far as someone moving with purpose to a destination. Remember that simply traveling through a square will still fully reveal it.
  • IC Days are split into three 8-hour increments. Each of these corresponds to one OOC day. Morning is from 4AM -> 11:59AM, Day is from 12PM -> 7:59PM, and Night is 8PM -> 3:59AM.
  • Several examples of search requests are provided below to help illustrate how they work. If you still have questions, please ask them in the FAQ (or in your search request!).

All new characters will be given a toplevel to this post. To submit a search request, fill out the below form and copy/paste it as a response to your toplevel.

IC DATES: The IC dates the search request covers (I would also recommend putting this in the subject line to make it easier to keyword search later). You can use whole days, partial days, or a combination of either. To verify what IC days line up with real-world days and events, consult the Calendar.

STARTING SQUARE: The square your character is starting their search request on, format TILE.COLUMN.ROW. This should line up with your previous search request, or your starting location if newly arrived/revived.

ENDING SQUARE: The square your character is ending their search request on. If you're not sure where they'll end up (the area is unexplored/your character has a vague idea of where they want to go/you're not sure on the math/etc.), you can give a more rough answer here. Something like "they want to make it to Tile II," or "as close to II.AA.3 as possible" are perfectly valid answers.

DETAILS: The meat of your request. This is where you describe:
  1. The path your character is taking,
  2. The squares you want them to search,
  3. Any special actions your character is taking during this period of time (or inaction), and
  4. Any other special notes or questions you might have about this request.
Again, you can provide as much or as little information as you want; saying that your character is simply moving from point A to point B without searching anything is 100% acceptable.

(I did mean AA, thank you!)

She'll take the bag, the stake, and a small bundle of bananas (but no mystery fruit, because fuck no risking accidentally poisoning herself)! Are the bananas growing on a tree, and if so, how many are there?

He snags that broken harpoon bolt and hides it up in his sleeve.

When Lalo pesters him with the conch shell he's mostly just swatting it away because ew gross, he doesn't want whatever's in that thing near his ear, but he's also extra on guard after Lalo blows it. He's keeping an eye and an ear out for anything else that might have been attracted by the noise.

( Oh oops, I thought it was for the whole day but I guess it's just morning :') )

Guess he's not going for a swim after all. Can he see anything else about the creature that might help determine what exactly it is?

He's going to follow the treeline a little further from the river (to F-G columns) just in case the creature returns, and look for thin/young trees and big leaves he can chop down to fashion up a very simple shelter (think something like this.) He'd want to build that a bit further (by a couple squares, so around E12 depending how the hidden part looks) from the jungle. He'll also look for a branch/stalk that he could sharpen one and with as a makeshift spear.

Assuming he can get that done, he'll proceed along the treeline for about 5 more squares. He's taking it slow and looking for coconut trees in particular, but also anything else useful he might find.

After that, he'll head away from the jungle and into the beach, again checking and kicking the sand for anything useful or odd, though in particular he's hoping to find any glass slivers or remains, or plastic trash like bottles that could be used.
aluminumandash: (but I'm going to alaska)

[personal profile] aluminumandash 2023-05-18 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
IC DATES: Day 1 (day)
STARTING SQUARE: III.W.21
ENDING SQUARE: Heading SW until he's out of reach of the tide and has found some cover from the sun, but he wouldn't venture too far into the jungle.

He’ll hang onto everything for now, but questions: is the sardine tin punctured in such a way that it can’t hold water? How rusted is it? Is there an expiration date?

With the tide coming in and the day heating up, Rust’ll retreat from the beach (making sure to mark his path) with the aim of finding cover and waiting out the worst of the heat. He’d try to avoid the direction he heard the thrumming coming from, but that might not be possible…

In places he hasn’t yet explored, he’ll still be searching thoroughly—keeping an eye out for tracks, disturbed vegetation, anything that might be edible or drinkable, and plants/vines that might be useful for making traps. He’ll be listening for agitated wildlife and the dreaded drone noise.

Depending on what’s going on with the weather, potential activities include: trying to collect rainwater in the plastic bag (via angling a nice big leaf toward it), disassembling his lighter so he can assess how messed up it is from the dunk in the ocean, and bird-and-creature watching.

He'll snag those cattails, and leave the harpoon bolt with Lalo for a bit for fire-starting purposes.

After the birds incident, Kokichi will be very exasperated and leave Lalo to set up camp while he searches the area. He'll use the last few hours of the morning and the beginning of Day 001 to thoroughly search VII.X.24. and the eight squares surrounding it.
salamanca: (014)

[personal profile] salamanca 2023-05-18 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
It is a minor detail! He'll be happy to tell you he hears the ocean much better with the conch to his ear.

Lalo will find the Birds Incident (TM) hilarious, regardless of Kokichi's dismay. He knows what he's doing!

He'll stay behind to set up camp while Kokichi searches the area. He'll use the kindling he found, Kokichi's broken harpoon bolt and one round from his gun to start a survival fire. This will leave him with 3 rounds.

He'll use the conch shell and the leaf to boil water from the river in order to make it safe for he & Kokichi to drink. He'll also open and grill the pineapple for them to eat.

He's also going to be looking for suitable branches, leaves, etc that can make a small lean-to where they can be out of the sun/rain/elements as much as possible.

Let me know how much time he has left after doing all of that!

Re: Maximus Decimus Gladius| Gladiator (AU)

[personal profile] maximusspainard 2023-05-19 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
IC DATES: Day 1 (Morning)- Day 1 (Day)
STARTING SQUARE: II.A.11
ENDING SQUARE: II. E. 11
DETAILS:

IIA11, Maximus squeezes out his outfit and keeps moving east toward the dry beach, looking inward for tracks (human/animal/robot) or otherwise around him.

IIB11> He moves to the next square, only stopping to sniff the sand for nearby animal scents. After placing the dirt down, he searches the beach for anything particularly worth scrounging up on the beach. He listens intently for more tracks (Human/animal, etc..)

IIC11- He searches again for anything of interest or usefulness to him.

IID11>IIE11- He repeats his process of looking at tracks on the ground (human/animal), listening for any of the mysterious sounds of any animal or human voices in the distance.

He'll search for anything useful, plants or life around him. He'll also listen for noises around his area.

Squalo will leave behind the degraded plastic container, and pick up everything else (although the planks will be used up in shelter construction).

He'll return to his makeshift shelter for some protection from the elements for the night, but he's in no rush to sleep. He's keeping the hatchet within reach.

He's going to examine one of the weird dark red fruits he's picked up, opening it on one end with the help of his many tools. First he's going to sniff its insides; does it smell like anything the average person would be familiar with?

If it doesn't seem alarming, he's going to eat a small piece and wait.

If it doesn't cause any strange effects, he'll stay awake for a couple more hours, listening (and watching, however little is visible) for anything suspicious. He'll probably drift off for a few hours toward the morning, but thanks to his profession he sleeps very lightly and most nearby noises or movements would wake him up immediately.

( Let me know if anything else of note happens regarding all this - otherwise I'll be back later for Day 002! :) )

The lockpick goes in his pocket.

He'll collect the syringe, but put it in the corner of the cell where he'll be sure he's not going to accidentally step on it. And... drink some of the water from the tank. He'll be praying to any god willing to listen that this doesn't make him horribly ill, but he's more worried about the thirst than the potential tropical diseases right in this moment.

He's going to be using his fingers (where he can) and the lockpick (where he can't use his fingers) to feel around the front of the door where the deadbolts are. Essentially, he's trying to see if they are ONLY operable on an electronic mechanism or if there's something physical he can try to turn to unlock them. If this is available, he'll be following Kokichi's advice, using a shoelace that's been tied with a loop and essentially fishing for the physical lock mechanism. He'll tie the lace to the lockpick and use that for the initial fishing if he can't manage with just his fingers through the bars. But he'll pull the lockpick in and grasp the string with his fingers as quickly as possible, if he has to use that. Essentially, he's just trying to prevent bending/breaking the lockpick while using it for fishing.

Alternatively, he'll check if there's some sort of analog lock there that someone could try to pick to get the bolt undone.

Is the door, itself, solid, rather than barred?
aluminumandash: (but then they hadn't grown so strong)

[personal profile] aluminumandash 2023-05-19 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
IC DATES: Day 1 -- > Night 1
STARTING SQUARE: III.R.26
ENDING SQUARE: Following the drone, then heading back to the beach (we hope)
DETAILS:
He’ll sniff the fish and cut it open, would anything unusual result? How long is the stake?

Friendship ended with seat cushion (abandoned near III.T.24, though he might come back for it), sharpened metal stake is his new best friend. He’ll drink some of the water and save the bulk of it for later, and eat the plum.

He’ll follow the drone—at regular speed, no thorough searching—until it’s out of sight/hearing, keeping low to the ground and sticking to cover if he can. (If this lasts more than an hour lmk—I’m assuming it won’t.)

After that, if there’s still enough light he’ll return to the nearest stretch of beach and, moving SE along the coastline: look for any trace of Martin (tracks, the arrows Martin said he was drawing)/his dead body, as well as any edible sea creatures washed in by the tide. He'll be very alert to the sound of approaching drones.

Once it starts to get dark he’ll focus on (hastily...) making a fire, closer to the beach than the jungle but not in full view. He’ll dig a fire pit in the sand and use his lighter and whatever sticks/vines/grass he can find. After he makes the fire (I'm assuming it'll be full-on night by then) he’ll hide nearby and watch for an hour to make sure it doesn’t attract any drones.

Day 2

[personal profile] cactusy 2023-05-19 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
IC DATES: Day 2 (morning)
STARTING SQUARE: III.AA.28
ENDING SQUARE: III.T.28
DETAILS: Still hanging in the jungle, still searching doggedly and thoroughly for anything suspicious (particularly anything electronic), still keeping a careful ear and eye out for drones. She will also be looking for a tall, sturdy tree to climb in an effort to survey her surroundings better.

III.Y.28
III.X.28
III.W.28
III.V.28
III.U.28
III.T.28

Not taking the full eight squares because I'm assuming some time built in for non-walking, non-searching options (rests, food breaks, pee breaks, network coordination, pausing to considering her options, potential tree-climbing, potential drone evasion).

Puts the barbed wire (CAREFULLY) in the suitcase, takes the bucket for now but might drop it later. Takes watercress and puts it in one of his many pouches.

Is there anything where he is now that can be used for a makeshift shelter/safe place for the night? (Including a climbable tree, he's not all that picky.) Is there any type of stone like flint to start a fire? (I should have included some in his pockets but since I didn't, here we are lol) And is there anything else edible? He won't be able to make it much further and he knows that about himself so he's more dedicated to not dying on night one for now.

Taking everything (feathers, arrowhead and large waterproof leaf)!

He'll look around to see if there's potentially any way across the river at the thinnest part that doesn't involve getting in the water (any spots narrow enough to jump it, rocks or something he can hop across, branches stretching out over the river he can climb across, etc). If there's nothing that looks feasible in the area, then he may or may not risk getting in the water depending on how it looks. If the water isn't moving too fast, is clear enough to know nothing's hiding in it, and less than maybe 20ft wide, then he'll cautiously try to cross it (leaving the items he scavenged on the shore for now).

If nothing looks safe, then he'll instead continue along this side of the river another few blocks, searching thoroughly before doubling back to camp before it gets dark.
