Search Requests

SEARCH REQUESTS

At game start, the map is completely unexplored and covered by a "fog of war" obscuring its features. New characters will be randomly dropped onto the island's shores; from there, to uncover tiles on the map and figure out more about where they are, search requests are required to document movement, attempt to uncover hidden materials and passages, discover or confront dangers, find old ruins and create new settlements, and potentially, solve puzzles related to the mystery of the island itself.

RULES AND GUIDELINES

  • Search requests are a required mechanic of this game. A search request for the current AC cycle must be submitted in order to pass AC without a strike.
  • Mistakes in search requests will never be penalized. Don't be afraid to eyeball a distance or make an approximate guess; if the math doesn't quite match up, or the path doesn't exist, I will offer alternate destinations and work with you in order to decide how the search request will resolve.
  • Search requests will rarely be immediately fatal. Unless your character is doing something intentionally reckless, I will do my best to offer paths of escape for any sudden dangers that arise.
  • You can be as precise or as vague as you want. If you want to exactly plot out the squares your character will travel through and search every IC day, that is totally fine. It's also fine to simply report that your character is staying in one place all month, or to give a starting point and a desired destination, with a general request to search a wide area. Just note that, the more vague you are in your request, the more I will extrapolate to fill in the blanks.
  • Retroactive/backdated search requests are allowed. They just can't be used for the current month's AC if they fall outside of the current month's AC period, or overwrite a previously submitted search request. Forward-dated search requests are also allowed as long as they fall within the same IC day that the request was posted (for example, if you post a search request on IC Day 30 morning, you can make that search request last for the entirety of IC day 30, not just the morning of).
  • Thoroughly searching a square, rather than just traveling through it, halves movement through that square. So if you choose to search every square along a path, you'll only travel half as far as someone moving with purpose to a destination. Remember that simply traveling through a square will still fully reveal it.
  • IC Days are split into three 8-hour increments. Each of these corresponds to one OOC day. Morning is from 4AM -> 11:59AM, Day is from 12PM -> 7:59PM, and Night is 8PM -> 3:59AM.
  • Several examples of search requests are provided below to help illustrate how they work. If you still have questions, please ask them in the FAQ (or in your search request!).

All new characters will be given a toplevel to this post. To submit a search request, fill out the below form and copy/paste it as a response to your toplevel.

IC DATES: The IC dates the search request covers (I would also recommend putting this in the subject line to make it easier to keyword search later). You can use whole days, partial days, or a combination of either. To verify what IC days line up with real-world days and events, consult the Calendar.

STARTING SQUARE: The square your character is starting their search request on, format TILE.COLUMN.ROW. This should line up with your previous search request, or your starting location if newly arrived/revived.

ENDING SQUARE: The square your character is ending their search request on. If you're not sure where they'll end up (the area is unexplored/your character has a vague idea of where they want to go/you're not sure on the math/etc.), you can give a more rough answer here. Something like "they want to make it to Tile II," or "as close to II.AA.3 as possible" are perfectly valid answers.

DETAILS: The meat of your request. This is where you describe:
  1. The path your character is taking,
  2. The squares you want them to search,
  3. Any special actions your character is taking during this period of time (or inaction), and
  4. Any other special notes or questions you might have about this request.
Again, you can provide as much or as little information as you want; saying that your character is simply moving from point A to point B without searching anything is 100% acceptable.

How interesting! Guess he has a future mission in mind! Marking their base itself seems unwise, but he will test it and try to mark and label the hotel ruins (named "tall inn") as precisely as he can manage, as it is far enough from their camp not to be immediately dangerous but close enough that he can check it out later and see if anything (or anyone) happened.

Is the beach carry case something like this, or more like suitcase?

He'll take everything else, except for the rosehip, head back to one of the empty hangars in IX.T.9 and test out his new can opener on the tomato can. Once opened, if not immediately obviously spoilt, he'll sniff it carefully to determine whether it's still suitable to eat or not. If still not clear, he'll taste test a small piece; if it seems fine he'll eat a reasonable portion of it (how large is it exactly? I assume it'd be at least two full servings?).

After that he'll look for a quiet corner to nap for a few hours, and spend the rest of Day 17 helping Team Science prepare for the incoming storm, including helping them drag the raft to the designated place and securing the hangar.

Funny question - would the sulphur chunk fit in the sock? If it does she’ll carry it that way so crumbles don't get everywhere.

Also would a video game character who uses a lot of guns be able to get any information from the shell?

Is the belt buckle just a regular buckle or a fun design?

Hmm, he'll pick up both of the cases, but he'll put the suitcase-y one into the shared inventory at the airfield camp, since it's not too comfortable to carry around.

He'll use the new one himself to put his beach umbrella in so he can carry it more comfortably and keep his arms free. He also takes the canned meat and the half-dollar coin.

Day 018-020 (Storm)

[personal profile] wingbound 2023-08-22 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
IC DATES: Morning 018 - Night 020
STARTING SQUARE: IX.T.9, inside the hangar(s)
ENDING SQUARE: IX.T.9, inside the hangar(s)
DETAILS:

Waiting the storm out in the fortified hangar along with whoever is also present from Team Science. He'll mostly stay put and keep to himself, but help out with daily tasks and cleaning. He'll also encourage people to eat his canned tomatoes; once the can is empty he'll wash it out and keep it, as it seems good to boil water in.

He'll also want to put out some containers outside/near the hangar doors to catch rainwater (and then likely use some of it to wash up later because rain water is nicer than dirty river water). He may or may not try to bully everyone into doing laundry with it (but safely under a roof ofc).

Later on, he might also slip out into the immediate vicinity of the hangar outside to take a leak because he's not using the bucket that other people are using, thanks. But he'll be quick about it, stay near the wall and make sure the hangar is between him and the direction of the wind, and isn't going to wander around out of cover.

Day 23

[personal profile] clowngirl 2023-08-22 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
IC DATES: Day 23 (day)
STARTING SQUARE: IV.F.24
ENDING SQUARE: ???
DETAILS:
The beach here tells a story of a battered coastline, littered with pebbles and jagged rocks. The tide hasn't had a chance to come in yet, but from the shore Harley can see riptides pulling the waves away at a frightening speed. Even the oceanside trees look ragged - bent away, uprooted, and stripped of leaves, replacing the sand with an assortment of leaf litter and discarded shells of bark and fruit. A lot of the damage looks alarmingly fresh.

Harley wonders if the recent storm that appears to have passed through is responsible for her washing up on this rough-looking beach. She's going to grab the nearest stick or break a small branch off of one of the damaged trees if she can, and poke around the beach to see if anything she's missing is among the debris (purse, phone, boyfriend). She'll also keep an eye out for any cool sea shells or sea glass.

Eventually, she'll grab the radio nearby and set off following the coastline to the west, continuing to look around for anything that might belong to her or others.

Cool! Great! Amazing!

They're getting Maddy on the raft as quickly as possible once Levi has performed some first aid to get her as bandaged and secure as she can be. Then pushing off and paddling like their lives depend on it. They'll try to get back to the west side of the Enemy Rivers before mooring the raft and dragging it up out of the water. If they manage to make it without dying, they'll get Maddy to the airbase with Martin supporting or carrying her as needed.

Martin will be focusing on paddling and keeping an eye out for more shapes in the water or a return of the fins. The group will keep the raft as close to shore as is feasible without ending up in the wave breaks.

Day 21 - 22

[personal profile] hyakuoku 2023-08-23 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
IC DATES: afternoon 21 - probably til evening 22 (I'm not good at the movement speed thing here)
STARTING SQUARE: IX.T.9 why did I get this wrong last time MY BAD
ENDING SQUARE: IDEALLY THE SAME
DETAILS:

For afternoon - night of Day 21, he'll go look by the Bungalows, same general idea as last time but especially cell phone parts. He's also looking to see if there's something like an SD card adapter that the micro-SD card goes in to fit into the bigger slot on the transceiver. Like this sort of thing. If he doesn't find one, time to see if there's a slot on the drone that it fits into when he goes back in the evening.

(He does sleep at night for a few hours ofc)

Day 22:

Senku is with Levi and Martin rescuing Maddy and we see how that's going! Is there anything else to observe about the shark? Senku found that giant tooth before; does it match this shark's size? (oR ARE THERE BIGGER ONES OUT THERE, SCREAM)

Once they have Maddy, Senku is taking care of her on the raft since he's useless at paddling whoops to keep her from falling off.

He does know how sharks work, what is myth and what is not, maybe that's a slight stat bonus lol since he'd obviously tell Martin and Levi what he could manage to about sharks.

Also he's wondering after his convo with Snake player, you know, maybe "the Shark" and "the Orca" are sentient creatures who could communicate with them. Not that there's a way to test that now but if they see the scary shark again he's going to observe it as best he can while being absolutely terrified. He's good at getting shit done while scared, it's fine, everything here is F I N E

Day 21 --> Morning 23

[personal profile] salamanca 2023-08-24 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
IC DATES: Day 21 --> Morning 23
STARTING SQUARE: VII.H.8
ENDING SQUARE: VII.O.9 (or roughly around thereabouts)
DETAILS:

Rust and Lalo will camp out the rest of the night in their new spot, spending the night sleeping and surveilling the cabin.

After that, they'll be hurting for water, so first this the next morning, at sunrise, Lalo will take them to the river! They'll loop the long way around the cabin to avoid passing too close to it, giving it as wide a berth as they can while still keeping it in view. Lalo will also specifically be avoiding taking them through the same area where he died, if that's on the way.

Lalo will thoroughly search each square he passes through for either anything that looks like it was deliberately left out for someone to find, or maybe pieces of the cabin that blew off in the storm; he'll leave looking for tracks to Rust. He's also having Rust check for traps though iirc I think Rust is still trying to lead him into one, lol.

They won't stop traveling until they reach the river, where they will stay through the night into the next morning.

IC DATES: Day 21 —> Morning 23
STARTING SQUARE: VII.H.8
ENDING SQUARE: Aiming for VII.O.9
DETAILS: STILL BEING HELD HOSTAGE, Rust will try to stay on the alert through the night—listening for sounds of hunting/agitated wildlife or, on the other hand, anything that might accompany clean-up attempts (hacking at felled trees? dragging shit out of the way?). He’ll also keep a lookout for any kind of evidence of a fire in use near the cabin (so…light or smoke ahahahah).

As he and Lalo navigate around the cabin, he’ll be operating under the assumption that most of the traps were destroyed in the storm—but he’ll still be searching for them/their remains, both because he HAS NO CHOICE and because he’d like to examine them. (What are they made of? Are they designed for large or small prey? Are there other types of traps besides snares? And so forth.) Tracking will probably be tough given the state of…everything…but he’ll look for any fresh tracks, pre-existing game trails, or signs of cleanup. As well as random junk that might’ve fallen out of the sky, signs of impact, or dead animals.

He’ll also look for more clumps of fur (particularly early in the morning when it’s less sunny and therefore easier to spot) and make note of spots that offer a good view of the cabin (if any).

Time permitting, he'll do some light fishing with his net if/when they get to the river (as long as the current isn't too wild and the banks aren't totally flooded)—as much for debris and strange objects as for actual fish. He'll basically be using one arm for this, so give any attacking catfish an appropriate stat bonus.
