Search Requests
SEARCH REQUESTS
At game start, the map is completely unexplored and covered by a "fog of war" obscuring its features. New characters will be randomly dropped onto the island's shores; from there, to uncover tiles on the map and figure out more about where they are, search requests are required to document movement, attempt to uncover hidden materials and passages, discover or confront dangers, find old ruins and create new settlements, and potentially, solve puzzles related to the mystery of the island itself.
RULES AND GUIDELINES
- Search requests are a required mechanic of this game. A search request for the current AC cycle must be submitted in order to pass AC without a strike.
- Mistakes in search requests will never be penalized. Don't be afraid to eyeball a distance or make an approximate guess; if the math doesn't quite match up, or the path doesn't exist, I will offer alternate destinations and work with you in order to decide how the search request will resolve.
- Search requests will rarely be immediately fatal. Unless your character is doing something intentionally reckless, I will do my best to offer paths of escape for any sudden dangers that arise.
- You can be as precise or as vague as you want. If you want to exactly plot out the squares your character will travel through and search every IC day, that is totally fine. It's also fine to simply report that your character is staying in one place all month, or to give a starting point and a desired destination, with a general request to search a wide area. Just note that, the more vague you are in your request, the more I will extrapolate to fill in the blanks.
- Retroactive/backdated search requests are allowed. They just can't be used for the current month's AC if they fall outside of the current month's AC period, or overwrite a previously submitted search request. Forward-dated search requests are also allowed as long as they fall within the same IC day that the request was posted (for example, if you post a search request on IC Day 30 morning, you can make that search request last for the entirety of IC day 30, not just the morning of).
- Thoroughly searching a square, rather than just traveling through it, halves movement through that square. So if you choose to search every square along a path, you'll only travel half as far as someone moving with purpose to a destination. Remember that simply traveling through a square will still fully reveal it.
- IC Days are split into three 8-hour increments. Each of these corresponds to one OOC day. Morning is from 4AM -> 11:59AM, Day is from 12PM -> 7:59PM, and Night is 8PM -> 3:59AM.
- Several examples of search requests are provided below to help illustrate how they work. If you still have questions, please ask them in the FAQ (or in your search request!).

SUBMISSIONS
All new characters will be given a toplevel to this post. To submit a search request, fill out the below form and copy/paste it as a response to your toplevel.
IC DATES: The IC dates the search request covers (I would also recommend putting this in the subject line to make it easier to keyword search later). You can use whole days, partial days, or a combination of either. To verify what IC days line up with real-world days and events, consult the Calendar.
STARTING SQUARE: The square your character is starting their search request on, format TILE.COLUMN.ROW. This should line up with your previous search request, or your starting location if newly arrived/revived.
ENDING SQUARE: The square your character is ending their search request on. If you're not sure where they'll end up (the area is unexplored/your character has a vague idea of where they want to go/you're not sure on the math/etc.), you can give a more rough answer here. Something like "they want to make it to Tile II," or "as close to II.AA.3 as possible" are perfectly valid answers.
DETAILS: The meat of your request. This is where you describe:
- The path your character is taking,
- The squares you want them to search,
- Any special actions your character is taking during this period of time (or inaction), and
- Any other special notes or questions you might have about this request.

STARTING SQUARE: VII.K.8
ENDING SQUARE: a reasonably good, safe vantage point to observe the cabin - he hopes!
DETAILS:
Staying as hidden in the brush as he can, Lalo will slowly crawl towards the cabin, cautiously and on high alert. He isn't looking for a fight, he's trying to avoid being seen at all, but he will draw his gun and awkwardly hobble/crawl with one injured arm. He'll wince but not make any noise from the pain.
He's aiming to get to a good, relatively camouflaged spot to observe the cabin, but he does know he's taking a risk even by doing that. He won't want to go all the way up to the cabin until he's had the chance to sit and observe it first. If he's able to get to a good spot without dying, he'll spend the next 2 - 3 hours quietly watching the cabin.

Probably around the time Lalo realizes this, he brushes against a tripwire hidden in some bushes and is roughly hauled into the air via rope snare. This leaves him with a minor injury, which does not impair his movement any further, but the fact that he's dangling about five feet off the ground definitely does.
Lalo has 6 hours remaining before Night 007.

That realization doesn't stop him from giving out a loud, high-pitched yelp right as he's ripped into the air. He ends up dangling upside down by his ankle. Since you didn't specify - I'm assuming that means I get to pick how he's hanging, lol.
I'm going to say he drops his gun - I'll be nice and say he's lucky (or unlucky?) enough that it doesn't go off, lol - but is able to hang onto his walkie (somehow), aaand he's also going to drop his good buddy the conch. :( And the eggplants! Also everything in his pockets (cash, finger bone, bullet casing) will all fall out onto the ground too. Everything that was in the pouch around his belt loop should be fine because he had that tied to him rather than carrying it anyway, so I'm going to say he still has all of that at his disposal.
Lalo spends the next hour just hanging around (ha - literally) and taking stock of his predicament, going over options in his head, and forming a plan to free himself. He may or may not also be talking/reaching out to people on the walkies. Does anything happen in that time?
Also, what's he got at his disposal around him? Anything at all? He's pretty good at using his environment his advantage, although his compromising position might negate that. Still, might be helpful to know if there's anything that could help him out, or even just anything unusual he might want to pay attention to.
Are there any signs of struggle or disturbance or human remains anywhere that he can see from his current position?
Oh, and finally - how well can he see the cabin from this position? He'll try to observe that, too, if he can.

Unfortunately, the only thing Lalo's observations tell him is that this trap was set up by someone that knew exactly what they were doing. The snare is suspended from a long, supple branch of a tree, another yard above the bottom of Lalo's feet, and more than five feet away from the supporting tree's trunk. The rope is made of sturdily woven hemp; Lalo could theoretically struggle enough to loosen it, maybe, but that would just mean going head-first into the ground, which is not a particularly desirable position to be in either. He can spot a few more suspiciously bent tree branches in the path ahead of him that suggest that there are even more traps like this on the way to the cabin. No signs of struggle or human remains, though - if others have been caught in this gauntlet, their keeper has been cleaning up after them.
After about ten minutes of observation and probably some internal panicking, as the blood rushing to his head is starting to make him quite dizzy, Lalo will suddenly feel the cold press of the barrel of a gun on the back of his skull. His gun.
"The next animal I find here will die a much slower death," says a voice next to his ear. It sounds like more of a growl than actual words, but Lalo's translator helps him understand it anyway. "Tell your friends for me, pet."
Then the stranger shoots Lalo in the back of the head, killing him instantly.

Lalo stares up at the hemp rope holding his ankle with rage and indignation, but the rage isn't enough to completely drown out his critical thinking skills. For someone to get this good at setting traps, they've been practicing. They do it a lot.
They did not get that good in the span of a week. There are implications to that he can process later, when he's not hanging upside down, dizzy and humiliated as he spins by one ankle.
He's not worried at first, despite his predicament. He's gotten out of worse things before. He's got an arrowhead at his disposal, and he's fit enough to be able to curl up to touch his own feet. He could cut himself loose, maybe. Angle so he'd break his fall and not land on his neck...
He's thinking about it, watching the cabin, when the figure he saw disappears from his view. Then his heart begins to thud wildly. There's only one possibility for what that could mean. If he can't see them, then, oh shit, oh fuck, that means -
He starts to thrash and struggle, but that only makes him dizzier. Oof, he's so dizzy. Whoa, man! This shit is crazy. They should charge people to do this instead of drugs -
He hears the approach and is about to turn on the charm, a cheery smile and a bright, "Hey!" escaping him right before the growling makes the smile die from his lips and fade into nothingness. He's not going to beg - fuck that - even if he had the time to get in some begging, which he doesn't.
Lalo can't see the person behind him, but feeling the gun to the back of his head makes him freeze on instinct. Ice crystals grow in his stomach, chilling him from the inside out.
It takes him less than a second to process that it's his own gun he's being threatened with, and that fills him with rage and humiliation anew, and the growling sound in his ear makes pin-pricks run down his spine. He breaths in, eyes squeezing shut as he processes the word "pet", and then there's a loud pop followed by nothing at all.

What about the growl? Did it sound male, female, or too animalistic to really tell? I'm assuming "too animal to tell" but want to cover all my bases.

* I'm assuming since he couldn't see the person that he also doesn't know what hand they used to fire the gun. Is this correct? Would he have any way to tell what hand was used (i.e., left- or right-handed)?
* I'm also assuming he never saw a hand reach for the gun or saw anyone pick up the gun. He saw the gun drop, watched the cabin, when the person or entity put the gun to his head the gun was just gone from the ground. Is this also correct?
* Would he have heard them checking the chamber of the gun? Or just noticed an amount of time passing that would have been consistent with somebody checking the chamber first? Or did they not check the chamber?
* Any distinct smells Lalo would have gotten from the entity? Breath smell or just any smell from them in general?
* Does the arrow look obviously mass-produced? I'm assuming no but might as well be 100% sure.
* What was the fletching on the arrow like? What kind of feathers?
* Did any kind of sound of signal precede the first arrow? Again, assuming no but want to be totally sure. If there was a sound, what kind of sound?
* Would he have seen any game trails or trails leading too/from the cabin?
* From when he was hanging upside down, could he see any doors or windows in the cabin? What did they look like? What was the roof made out of?
* Were there any twigs lashed together into odd shapes dangling from tree branches? (Assuming no on this one, but just checking)
