Search Requests
SEARCH REQUESTS
At game start, the map is completely unexplored and covered by a "fog of war" obscuring its features. New characters will be randomly dropped onto the island's shores; from there, to uncover tiles on the map and figure out more about where they are, search requests are required to document movement, attempt to uncover hidden materials and passages, discover or confront dangers, find old ruins and create new settlements, and potentially, solve puzzles related to the mystery of the island itself.
RULES AND GUIDELINES
- Search requests are a required mechanic of this game. A search request for the current AC cycle must be submitted in order to pass AC without a strike.
- Mistakes in search requests will never be penalized. Don't be afraid to eyeball a distance or make an approximate guess; if the math doesn't quite match up, or the path doesn't exist, I will offer alternate destinations and work with you in order to decide how the search request will resolve.
- Search requests will rarely be immediately fatal. Unless your character is doing something intentionally reckless, I will do my best to offer paths of escape for any sudden dangers that arise.
- You can be as precise or as vague as you want. If you want to exactly plot out the squares your character will travel through and search every IC day, that is totally fine. It's also fine to simply report that your character is staying in one place all month, or to give a starting point and a desired destination, with a general request to search a wide area. Just note that, the more vague you are in your request, the more I will extrapolate to fill in the blanks.
- Retroactive/backdated search requests are allowed. They just can't be used for the current month's AC if they fall outside of the current month's AC period, or overwrite a previously submitted search request. Forward-dated search requests are also allowed as long as they fall within the same IC day that the request was posted (for example, if you post a search request on IC Day 30 morning, you can make that search request last for the entirety of IC day 30, not just the morning of).
- Thoroughly searching a square, rather than just traveling through it, halves movement through that square. So if you choose to search every square along a path, you'll only travel half as far as someone moving with purpose to a destination. Remember that simply traveling through a square will still fully reveal it.
- IC Days are split into three 8-hour increments. Each of these corresponds to one OOC day. Morning is from 4AM -> 11:59AM, Day is from 12PM -> 7:59PM, and Night is 8PM -> 3:59AM.
- Several examples of search requests are provided below to help illustrate how they work. If you still have questions, please ask them in the FAQ (or in your search request!).

SUBMISSIONS
All new characters will be given a toplevel to this post. To submit a search request, fill out the below form and copy/paste it as a response to your toplevel.
IC DATES: The IC dates the search request covers (I would also recommend putting this in the subject line to make it easier to keyword search later). You can use whole days, partial days, or a combination of either. To verify what IC days line up with real-world days and events, consult the Calendar.
STARTING SQUARE: The square your character is starting their search request on, format TILE.COLUMN.ROW. This should line up with your previous search request, or your starting location if newly arrived/revived.
ENDING SQUARE: The square your character is ending their search request on. If you're not sure where they'll end up (the area is unexplored/your character has a vague idea of where they want to go/you're not sure on the math/etc.), you can give a more rough answer here. Something like "they want to make it to Tile II," or "as close to II.AA.3 as possible" are perfectly valid answers.
DETAILS: The meat of your request. This is where you describe:
- The path your character is taking,
- The squares you want them to search,
- Any special actions your character is taking during this period of time (or inaction), and
- Any other special notes or questions you might have about this request.
Day 11
IC DATES: Morning 11
STARTING SQUARE: III.B.26
ENDING SQUARE: Probably following the river north!
DETAILS: Rust and Lalo will wake up early, hoping to take advantage of the long shadows for tracking purposes. Rust will also keep an eye on any dew that gathered overnight, and whether it's been disturbed by someone/something passing through.
They'll thoroughly search the area around them, and if they don't find any indications of someone else's presence in the vicinity, they are going to head north along the river, proceeding with caution—Rust will lead the way, keeping a lookout for tracks (especially near the river bank), snares, or other signs of disturbance (as well as any eerily perfect-looking areas). He’ll also be observing what wildlife he can, in particular assessing the fish situation (are there a lot of fish? are they feeding? any good fishing spots?) and looking for birds whose feathers might match the fletching on the cabin gremlin’s arrows.
If he and Lalo can do this while hanging back from the river a little—finding some cover and leaving less blatant tracks—that would be ideal. They’ll be looking for a good place to bathe (ELEVEN DAYS LATER) and style Lalo's hair without dying. After bathing, they’ll keep going until they see something suspicious or get to the ocean (in which case, brunch/lunch and more birdwatching will ensue).

Starting Square: III.B.26
Ending Square: III.F.20
Duration: 8 hours
General Search Results:
Rust does not notice anything amiss in the immediate area or downstream; disturbances in the dew on plants is minor, likely just from small animals or from a critical mass of water running off the leaves. He does find a fish or two (including the sunfish near enough to the shore to catch), but the river is otherwise mostly devoid of large collections of wildlife. Most of the local birds seem keen on avoiding Rust and Lalo on their travels, not sticking around long enough to be captured or drop any feathers. The ones they do see don't have feathers reminiscent of the ones used in the arrows that murdered Lalo.

Questions! As far as the raft goes: what kind of condition is it in? How heavy is it? What color is it (just curious)? And lmao I assume it's deflated when he finds it, but I just want to confirm...also about how long would it take to inflate?
Are the planks Rust and Lalo find of uniform size? How worn are they?
Is any information visible on the prescription bottle Lalo finds? (Rust would look for the obvious—name, expiration date, name of the drug.) And I know the description said empty, but is there any leftover cotton padding?

The planks are not of uniform size, with some shorter than others, but they have the same rough thickness, as if they used to be uniform before being left outside for who knows how long. They are quite worn and most of them are cracked and broken.
The prescription bottle doesn't have a label. The lid looks like it might have had something printed on it at some point, but that's long since been worn away. There is no cotton padding on the inside.

STARTING SQUARE: III.F.20
ENDING SQUARE: III.F.20 (ish)
DETAILS: For the most part, Rust will be hanging with Lalo—the exception being that he'll thoroughly search the area surrounding the camp they make, with an eye for tracks, traps, and animal life 😔 He's still looking for that feather pattern!
He'll use his newly acquired handheld net to contribute to the fishing efforts, and when Lalo makes his campfire, Rust will conceal himself in (god help me I suck at reading the map) III.A.22 or somewhere where the beach verges on the jungle and affords some cover. He'll err more on the side of having some cover than keeping the fire totally in sight, since he should be able to see the smoke. After thoroughly searching the area in the hopes of finding a nice tree to climb and spy from, Rust will observe his surroundings—focused on the jungle/river to the South—until Lalo puts the fire out, and probably a little after (say an hour).

Starting Square: III.F.20
Ending Square: III.F.20
Duration: 24 hours
General Search Results:
Rust and Lalo make a campfire in square III.F.20, by the river, and then a proper campsite in adjacent square III.G.21. Rust finds plenty of wildlife during this time, but no significant land-based tracks, or traps like what Steph found around this area.
Rust's individual fishing efforts are fruitful; he captures a medium-sized trout in his net, separate from the other animals detailed above.
Later, he's able to find a tree he can climb in square III.E.25, affording him some height (enough to still see the campfire from five kilometers away), but it doesn't look sturdy enough at the top to support his weight. Would he try to climb it anyway for a better vantage?

TRULY SORRY FOR THIS ONSLAUGHT OF QUESTIONS...
Re: the credit card and the prescription bottle, the usual questions—are any names, dates, or brand names visible? Is the credit card the same type as the mystery Business card Rust found already?
Does the pile of feathers look like it was deliberately gathered/placed? Any tracks around it (from birds or...otherwise) or signs of distress (blood, matting)?
Is the watch analog or digital? Is it a ~luxury~ watch or more sporty? Is the face cracked, or is some other part broken?
Does the harpoon bolt (😬) look handmade? Any evidence of it being recently used?
LAST QUESTION: do the 2 tins of hair gel match (same size, age, etc) the one Lalo found? Does the hair gel have a scent?
no subject
The feathers are in a relatively neat pile and all in decent condition, like they were individually plucked, but none of them are perfect; all of them are either downy undercoat or lightly damaged flight feathers, presumably with the best of the lot carted away. Rust does not spot any tracks or signs of a struggle around them.
The watch is digital, low-quality, with a hot pink plastic exterior and velcro strap. The display won't turn on, so presumably there's something wrong with the internal electronics or it's out of battery or something along those lines.
The harpoon bolt looks like it is not handmade, or expertly metal-molded if it was. It seems pretty old with some rusty patches and pitting from prolonged exposure to water.
The tins of hair gel do not match each other or the one Lalo received, each with their own unique consistency and state of degradation. The one Lalo has smells faintly of grease, another one smells of vanilla, and the third smells intensely of cheap masculine body spray.
