Search Requests

SEARCH REQUESTS

At game start, the map is completely unexplored and covered by a "fog of war" obscuring its features. New characters will be randomly dropped onto the island's shores; from there, to uncover tiles on the map and figure out more about where they are, search requests are required to document movement, attempt to uncover hidden materials and passages, discover or confront dangers, find old ruins and create new settlements, and potentially, solve puzzles related to the mystery of the island itself.

RULES AND GUIDELINES

  • Search requests are a required mechanic of this game. A search request for the current AC cycle must be submitted in order to pass AC without a strike.
  • Mistakes in search requests will never be penalized. Don't be afraid to eyeball a distance or make an approximate guess; if the math doesn't quite match up, or the path doesn't exist, I will offer alternate destinations and work with you in order to decide how the search request will resolve.
  • Search requests will rarely be immediately fatal. Unless your character is doing something intentionally reckless, I will do my best to offer paths of escape for any sudden dangers that arise.
  • You can be as precise or as vague as you want. If you want to exactly plot out the squares your character will travel through and search every IC day, that is totally fine. It's also fine to simply report that your character is staying in one place all month, or to give a starting point and a desired destination, with a general request to search a wide area. Just note that, the more vague you are in your request, the more I will extrapolate to fill in the blanks.
  • Retroactive/backdated search requests are allowed. They just can't be used for the current month's AC if they fall outside of the current month's AC period, or overwrite a previously submitted search request. Forward-dated search requests are also allowed as long as they fall within the same IC day that the request was posted (for example, if you post a search request on IC Day 30 morning, you can make that search request last for the entirety of IC day 30, not just the morning of).
  • Thoroughly searching a square, rather than just traveling through it, halves movement through that square. So if you choose to search every square along a path, you'll only travel half as far as someone moving with purpose to a destination. Remember that simply traveling through a square will still fully reveal it.
  • IC Days are split into three 8-hour increments. Each of these corresponds to one OOC day. Morning is from 4AM -> 11:59AM, Day is from 12PM -> 7:59PM, and Night is 8PM -> 3:59AM.
  • Several examples of search requests are provided below to help illustrate how they work. If you still have questions, please ask them in the FAQ (or in your search request!).

All new characters will be given a toplevel to this post. To submit a search request, fill out the below form and copy/paste it as a response to your toplevel.

IC DATES: The IC dates the search request covers (I would also recommend putting this in the subject line to make it easier to keyword search later). You can use whole days, partial days, or a combination of either. To verify what IC days line up with real-world days and events, consult the Calendar.

STARTING SQUARE: The square your character is starting their search request on, format TILE.COLUMN.ROW. This should line up with your previous search request, or your starting location if newly arrived/revived.

ENDING SQUARE: The square your character is ending their search request on. If you're not sure where they'll end up (the area is unexplored/your character has a vague idea of where they want to go/you're not sure on the math/etc.), you can give a more rough answer here. Something like "they want to make it to Tile II," or "as close to II.AA.3 as possible" are perfectly valid answers.

DETAILS: The meat of your request. This is where you describe:
  1. The path your character is taking,
  2. The squares you want them to search,
  3. Any special actions your character is taking during this period of time (or inaction), and
  4. Any other special notes or questions you might have about this request.
Again, you can provide as much or as little information as you want; saying that your character is simply moving from point A to point B without searching anything is 100% acceptable.

He's taking the plastic knife and the bananas! Also he's just going to eat said bananas immediately (and also drink some water).

From there he's going to head straight north (no zigzagging) until he hits the beach at V.CC.17 and follow the treeline north until he runs into the river at VI.C.11. He's moving a bit more slowly now, keeping an eye out for any structures on the beach or anything useful in the jungle.

Once he reaches the river, he's going to assess danger and, if there's nothing immediately threatening, try to catch some fish, and also wash up (unless there's something obviously filthy in the water like dead animal carcasses). He'll also try to see if there's any way to cross the river without swimming nearby, as usual.

Ew, coffee. But he figures he may be able to trade it so he picks it up.

He only wants, like, two fish, so he'll stop once he gets those and instead spend the rest of that time finding a suitable spot near the river to start a fire, clean and gut the fish and getting something to spear them on to cook. He'll discard the fish guts a bit further away from where he's staying, in case it attracts animals.

It also looks like there may be things Afoot back in the airfield (or at least Maddy is panicking) so after eating and resting for a bit he's going to turn back which should have happened earlier but I totally goofed on the shenanigans being backdated oops. He'll head straight south this time.

He would only be grazing the corner of tile X before running into a river, but if that could still kill him, let's say he veers slightly off course (it's not like he has a compass) so that he avoids tile X altogether and ends up back in IX instead. He'll be aiming back for the airfield base this time.

Taking the mushrooms, the stuffed raccoon, amber, charchoal, ginger and library card. He'll discard the muschrooms, amber and charchoal into the communal inventory at base, and later spend some time cleaning and patching up the plushie - never know when he might need to bribe some kids!

Is the sturdy branch straight enough to be fashioned into a makeshift spear?

Seeing as his injury doesn't impede his movement speed, it seems his military-issue boot protects his foot and instead the trap makes him trip and hit his head on a tree scrape/stab his arm a non-negligible amount on some rocks or vegetation. He'll take maybe ten to twenty minutes to clean the wound and patch it up with some pieces of beach towel leftover from Maddy's "bandages" as necessary (and also to quietly fume because this is a damn rookie error and he should know better than to walk into any traps!!) before continuing.

Once at the airfield, he's going to talk to some people who also aren't sleeping, work on cleaning up the raccoon plushie, and also take a few hours to wander off onto the beach, exploring tiles IX.R.10 -> IX.Q.10 -> IX.Q.11 -> IX.R.11 -> IX.S.11. Then, probably well into broad daylight next day (world's worst circadian rhythm indeed), he'll finally look for an empty/quiet hangar where he can catch some sleep in relative privacy.

He'll take the sail section, the pillowcase and the wrench. How big is the sail section, for future reference, since he'll probably be making stuff from it? (And he'll be taking that branch to sharpen too then!) Also he will deliver the AA battery to Team Science stash and plan to do the same with the pineapple but end up handing it to Levi (Jr) instead.

He's going to freak out just a little bit at CRABS TRYING TO EAT HIM WHILE HE SLEEPS which will manifest mostly as him bashing them with his shield to get them off and then doing his best to punt them across the hangar. The commotion will also alert Maddy who happens to be nearby (discussed with player) so she will come in to help him dispatch them (and show off her new sword skills).

They're probably going to do a bit of catching up (20-30 min?) and once Maddy chucking her transceiver into the sea comes up, Levi decides they should test whether that's actually a decent way to remain untracked. They'll be doing that right away (I imagine this mini-mission should fit into remainder of day 28 daylight hours!)

They'll be heading down to near the water around IX.T.13. Levi will hand his transceiver over to Maddy and also plug in his map extension, checking if the crosshatch shows up again and noting the position.

He leaves all the tech with Maddy and walks east for a couple hours, aiming roughly for IX.Z.15-IX.CC.15 (these spots are in the big gulf, so it should be obvious enough against the map's outline of the island if the crosshatch moves there). He'll be minding his step and avoiding rowdy crabs if he finds any to save time.

Maddy will be keeping an eye on the comm to see if the crosshatch is moving, and checking again at agreed time in about two hours after Levi left -- the purpose of this is to see whether the mark shows location of Levi's transceiver, or Levi himself. After the agreed time passes, he'll head back to Maddy and they'll both return to base for the night.

He'll take the coconut (ugh) and drop it off at the communal food stash.

He's spending the rest of the night at base/around others.
