Search Requests

SEARCH REQUESTS

At game start, the map is completely unexplored and covered by a "fog of war" obscuring its features. New characters will be randomly dropped onto the island's shores; from there, to uncover tiles on the map and figure out more about where they are, search requests are required to document movement, attempt to uncover hidden materials and passages, discover or confront dangers, find old ruins and create new settlements, and potentially, solve puzzles related to the mystery of the island itself.

RULES AND GUIDELINES

  • Search requests are a required mechanic of this game. A search request for the current AC cycle must be submitted in order to pass AC without a strike.
  • Mistakes in search requests will never be penalized. Don't be afraid to eyeball a distance or make an approximate guess; if the math doesn't quite match up, or the path doesn't exist, I will offer alternate destinations and work with you in order to decide how the search request will resolve.
  • Search requests will rarely be immediately fatal. Unless your character is doing something intentionally reckless, I will do my best to offer paths of escape for any sudden dangers that arise.
  • You can be as precise or as vague as you want. If you want to exactly plot out the squares your character will travel through and search every IC day, that is totally fine. It's also fine to simply report that your character is staying in one place all month, or to give a starting point and a desired destination, with a general request to search a wide area. Just note that, the more vague you are in your request, the more I will extrapolate to fill in the blanks.
  • Retroactive/backdated search requests are allowed. They just can't be used for the current month's AC if they fall outside of the current month's AC period, or overwrite a previously submitted search request. Forward-dated search requests are also allowed as long as they fall within the same IC day that the request was posted (for example, if you post a search request on IC Day 30 morning, you can make that search request last for the entirety of IC day 30, not just the morning of).
  • Thoroughly searching a square, rather than just traveling through it, halves movement through that square. So if you choose to search every square along a path, you'll only travel half as far as someone moving with purpose to a destination. Remember that simply traveling through a square will still fully reveal it.
  • IC Days are split into three 8-hour increments. Each of these corresponds to one OOC day. Morning is from 4AM -> 11:59AM, Day is from 12PM -> 7:59PM, and Night is 8PM -> 3:59AM.
  • Several examples of search requests are provided below to help illustrate how they work. If you still have questions, please ask them in the FAQ (or in your search request!).

All new characters will be given a toplevel to this post. To submit a search request, fill out the below form and copy/paste it as a response to your toplevel.

IC DATES: The IC dates the search request covers (I would also recommend putting this in the subject line to make it easier to keyword search later). You can use whole days, partial days, or a combination of either. To verify what IC days line up with real-world days and events, consult the Calendar.

STARTING SQUARE: The square your character is starting their search request on, format TILE.COLUMN.ROW. This should line up with your previous search request, or your starting location if newly arrived/revived.

ENDING SQUARE: The square your character is ending their search request on. If you're not sure where they'll end up (the area is unexplored/your character has a vague idea of where they want to go/you're not sure on the math/etc.), you can give a more rough answer here. Something like "they want to make it to Tile II," or "as close to II.AA.3 as possible" are perfectly valid answers.

DETAILS: The meat of your request. This is where you describe:
  1. The path your character is taking,
  2. The squares you want them to search,
  3. Any special actions your character is taking during this period of time (or inaction), and
  4. Any other special notes or questions you might have about this request.
Again, you can provide as much or as little information as you want; saying that your character is simply moving from point A to point B without searching anything is 100% acceptable.

Poor Kokichi! Martin will... probably notice that in his feverish haze. And be able to do nothing about it. I'll continue search requests with a fresh Day 3 one once we see where Jet's actions take him.

Makes enemies with a river...

ANYWAY, eats one (1) guava, leaves the holey bucket on the shore, and we're gonna try the ocean option. He's a good swimmer, but definitely has to take breaks.

If he could have picked up any water in that Tin Can Lalo found (or a weird improvised squid purse?? whatever works), that would be neat, but for now, he's following the drone that has Kokichi and he will be Stubborn about it.

Well....fuck. He deserved that for pushing limits he's not familiar with yet, but he's also not in the business of giving up.

He'll use the hemp netting to tie the split in his knee's artificial skin and what pieces might now be loose and rest an hour before digging in to keep going towards that structure. He can sleep when he's dead, or at least has eyes on the prize

Night 002 --> Morning 003

[personal profile] salamanca 2023-05-25 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
IC DATES: Night 002 into Morning 003
STARTING SQUARE: VII.K.30
ENDING SQUARE: VII.K.30 (stationary)
DETAILS:

Lalo will continue to sit there like that for about ten to fifteen minutes or so, or however long it takes until he's positive that Jet is gone and can no longer see him. Once Jet is definitely gone, he'll breathe a deep sigh of relief and scrub a hand over his face that he is finally, finally free of his own personal Sword of Damocles in the form of a deeply suicidal child who is apparently desperate to get himself killed. Which wouldn't normally be a problem -- except that Kokichi getting himself killed means getting Lalo killed by extension for letting it happen.

Now he can finally think.

He's going to discard the egg he stole from the birds the previous day, since lbr it's probably bad by now? Whoops. Guess Birdgate 1995 2004 2015 2019??? was all for nothing.

Then he's going to make a small campfire. He'll do it the old-fashioned way this time, with sticks, which might take him longer than the way he did before, but he doesn't want to use anymore bullets if he doesn't have to.

He's also gonna unhappily discard the fish because they've been sitting out for 3 hours (rule of thumb: fish shouldn't be left out at room temperature without being cooked for more than 2). He was really looking forward to that jerky! Damn it. Grumpily, he'll settle for cucumber instead while he boils water in the conch shell and plots his next moves. He'll drink some water now, and then boil some more water to sterilize so he can rinse out and then fill the empty beer bottle he'd been drinking from the night before so he has water to carry around with him!

Of course, he'll be on High Alert for more drones the entire time!

He'll then sleep for an hour (canonly all he needs, seriously). He's not gonna bother to build a shelter, just try to find a place that HE HOPES is out of the way enough to be safe-ish. He'll wake up after an hour and stay up through the rest of the night until dawn, so he can fish some more in the early dawn, at night listening to any radio messages he may have missed (on a very low volume, holding it up to his ear at times since it's hard to hear otherwise) and just think his evil little thoughts.

When it finally gets to dawn, he's gonna try to fish. He is gonna get some fish jerky, damn it, and it's gonna be good too.

Ok I think she's got like, 13 pods of peas at this point lmao.

She’ll eat like 4 (miserable, raw, the pod and everything) and go to sleep.

Day 3

[personal profile] meadqueen 2023-05-25 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
IC DATES: Day 3 all day
STARTING SQUARE: IX.T.9
ENDING SQUARE: depends on what she gets up to
DETAILS: Randvi will sleep 2 hours into morning again because she's waking up the same way as yesterday.

She’ll check her rain funnel but I don't think it'll have anything yet. (if there is anything she’ll take some in the plastic bottle)

After talking to everyone yesterday about planes she's going to take the morning block to go through the biggest hangar (the one set off by itself) looking for the sorts of things people described to her (maps, signs, pieces of planes, anything that might point to evidence that the people who abandoned the site were fleeing)

For Day 3 Day, she's going to head back down to the other settlement and explore it - first the restaurant (SO curious about the weird statues), then the houses by the forest.

I don't think she’ll have time to really do much with the tower before she has to head back to the airfield to sleep, so just the smaller buildings.

Night 3

Commence round two of stripping and looking for puncture marks/marks from being clawed! (Martin told Rust there were no side effects from the drug, just from being electrocuted—I’m assuming that’s accurate.)

After that’s done, Rust will search the cell—testing the strength of the bars; patting down, searching under, and then cutting open the mattress; inspecting the toilet and tank (including how well the toilet is attached to the floor and whether there are loose pipes in the tank…also is there toilet paper?); checking the walls, floor, and ceiling for any cracks or damage (or, as a secondary consideration, anything scratched into them).

He’ll also survey the larger room, using his lighter for extra illumination if necessary. How dirty is it? Are there any footprints, scuff marks, or signs of human activity?

AND BECAUSE I AM TERRIBLE AT VISUALIZATION: how far away from Rust’s cell are the electronic panel, desk, and inactive drones?

Enemy river DEFEATED!

Going to rest for one hour, that was a lot of work! Noted the anchovy, kept the shark tooth and the coral.

Makes a post about the SOS but decides to keep trying to get to the village.
ichoosefight: (oh ugh)

[personal profile] ichoosefight 2023-05-26 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Alas, poor bioluminescent Bambi. She'll be cooking it and trying not to puke, eating a little bit and saving the rest. The rest of the day will be spent attempting to weave a basket of some kind out of leaves. This will presumably take her until bedtime.
metalicarus: (Glasses | Um what?)

[personal profile] metalicarus 2023-05-26 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
He will carefully make his way through with every intention of reacting offensively (with his turtle shell if he has to) to those drones if they wake up.

His initial goal will be to inspect the terminal to see if there's a shut down option for the drones or a way to ensure they are in sleep mode and will not be waking up any time soon. If he can ascertain that, he'll go to the nearest cell door with Martin in it to see if he can open it from the outside.
sharktrash: (blank // this hangover is killing me)

[personal profile] sharktrash 2023-05-27 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Cool! He'll drink his fill and then be heading east, if possible moving a little south back into the foothills so he can move more easily. He'll go for... let's say 6 hours or until he runs into anything suspicious!

He's moving carefully, keeping an eye and ear out for anything suspicious or dangerous and his hands on the hatchet, and also checking for anything useful and/or edible, as well as potential escape routes in case of anything alarming.

Couple of questions: I'm assuming there's nothing legible on the paper but is it possible to tell by looking at it whether it's just too damaged to read or a pile of blank printer paper?

Is the beach towel generic beachy stuff or resort branded?

Does the keypad noticeably have power? (would the buttons beep or buzz on incorrect code, is there a red light, etc) Also is the keypad just numbers or alphanumeric?

Oh I should have asked before but does the restaurant have a sign still visible?

She’ll take everything except the straw, the glass, and the insulation (and the sign, but she’ll move that over to a wall so it's easier to find if someone wants to see it later)

IC DATES: Day 3 night
STARTING SQUARE: IX.T.9
ENDING SQUARE: IX.T.9
DETAILS: Randvi will do the same little trek to IX.T.7 as she did last night to look for materials to make a fire so she can cook her turtle eggs.

If this is successful, she’ll scrub out the oil pan with sand and cook them in there (assuming it's metal lol, if it's plastic she’ll just cook them on embers). While it's cooking, she’s going to try and untangle the fishing line if possible. (goal here if she can do it is to make herself a sort of beachcomber’s chatelaine with the bucket, the radio and the water bottle to make exploring easier)

Assuming no surprises, she’ll check the rain catcher again and go to bed.

He’ll take one of the willow shoots and whittle one end to a point with his knife (if necessary he’ll also whittle the whole thing down so it’s thin enough to fit through the bars), then extend it between the bars and attempt to prod at the panel.

(If willow shoots aren’t sturdy enough for this, he’ll give it a go with the knife itself—the blade’s a little over three inches.)

He’ll also eat a mango, and keep an eye on the cockroach (as much as possible while doing all this)—where’s it going? If it leaves the room, how does it leave?
