Search Requests

SEARCH REQUESTS

At game start, the map is completely unexplored and covered by a "fog of war" obscuring its features. New characters will be randomly dropped onto the island's shores; from there, to uncover tiles on the map and figure out more about where they are, search requests are required to document movement, attempt to uncover hidden materials and passages, discover or confront dangers, find old ruins and create new settlements, and potentially, solve puzzles related to the mystery of the island itself.

RULES AND GUIDELINES

  • Search requests are a required mechanic of this game. A search request for the current AC cycle must be submitted in order to pass AC without a strike.
  • Mistakes in search requests will never be penalized. Don't be afraid to eyeball a distance or make an approximate guess; if the math doesn't quite match up, or the path doesn't exist, I will offer alternate destinations and work with you in order to decide how the search request will resolve.
  • Search requests will rarely be immediately fatal. Unless your character is doing something intentionally reckless, I will do my best to offer paths of escape for any sudden dangers that arise.
  • You can be as precise or as vague as you want. If you want to exactly plot out the squares your character will travel through and search every IC day, that is totally fine. It's also fine to simply report that your character is staying in one place all month, or to give a starting point and a desired destination, with a general request to search a wide area. Just note that, the more vague you are in your request, the more I will extrapolate to fill in the blanks.
  • Retroactive/backdated search requests are allowed. They just can't be used for the current month's AC if they fall outside of the current month's AC period, or overwrite a previously submitted search request. Forward-dated search requests are also allowed as long as they fall within the same IC day that the request was posted (for example, if you post a search request on IC Day 30 morning, you can make that search request last for the entirety of IC day 30, not just the morning of).
  • Thoroughly searching a square, rather than just traveling through it, halves movement through that square. So if you choose to search every square along a path, you'll only travel half as far as someone moving with purpose to a destination. Remember that simply traveling through a square will still fully reveal it.
  • IC Days are split into three 8-hour increments. Each of these corresponds to one OOC day. Morning is from 4AM -> 11:59AM, Day is from 12PM -> 7:59PM, and Night is 8PM -> 3:59AM.
  • Several examples of search requests are provided below to help illustrate how they work. If you still have questions, please ask them in the FAQ (or in your search request!).

All new characters will be given a toplevel to this post. To submit a search request, fill out the below form and copy/paste it as a response to your toplevel.

IC DATES: The IC dates the search request covers (I would also recommend putting this in the subject line to make it easier to keyword search later). You can use whole days, partial days, or a combination of either. To verify what IC days line up with real-world days and events, consult the Calendar.

STARTING SQUARE: The square your character is starting their search request on, format TILE.COLUMN.ROW. This should line up with your previous search request, or your starting location if newly arrived/revived.

ENDING SQUARE: The square your character is ending their search request on. If you're not sure where they'll end up (the area is unexplored/your character has a vague idea of where they want to go/you're not sure on the math/etc.), you can give a more rough answer here. Something like "they want to make it to Tile II," or "as close to II.AA.3 as possible" are perfectly valid answers.

DETAILS: The meat of your request. This is where you describe:
  1. The path your character is taking,
  2. The squares you want them to search,
  3. Any special actions your character is taking during this period of time (or inaction), and
  4. Any other special notes or questions you might have about this request.
Again, you can provide as much or as little information as you want; saying that your character is simply moving from point A to point B without searching anything is 100% acceptable.

IC DATES: Day 2 (day and night)
STARTING SQUARE: III.T.28
ENDING SQUARE: VII.O.1
DETAILS: Still searching thoroughly for electronic things/the source of that announcement!

III.S.29
III.R.30
III.Q.31
III.P.32
VII.O.1

As nightfall nears, she'll keep searching thoroughly, but she'll also spend time hunting for a good sleeping tree, which (along with the same caveats as in the morning) I'm assuming will take some extra time.

No worries! I was trying to eyeball it and I was like, hm. This is a lot easier lol.

IC DATES: Day 1 morning - Day 1 day
STARTING SQUARE: V.P.19
ENDING SQUARE: V.S.20? I think?
DETAILS: Okay, so if there's no evidence of human activity in the mouth of the cave the risk involved in continuing in there is way too high at the moment. She'll take the oysters and retreat to the beach at V.Q.20.

Given the time required to navigate the ocean tile I think the tide will already be rising by this point, so it might have to be V.R.20. I'm going to give her an hour at this point to freak out and learn to use the radio.

After that the tide is definitely going to be visibly rising so she's going to have to climb out of there. If the cliff face in the 20 row is accessible she'll climb from there but if not she'll head back to 21.

She's in decent shape and good at climbing (in the game when she climbs the tower she's wearing way heavier wet clothes than she has here) so it's doable but I think getting to and then free climbing a cliff in an unfamiliar environment will probably eat up the rest of the morning.

After that she's probably going to like, lay down on the ground for a bit, but she's also going to need to start looking for water.

IC DATES: Night 1 - > Morning 2
STARTING SQUARE: III.R.26
ENDING SQUARE: III.R.26
DETAILS: Rust has insomnia, so welcome to hell! He won't sleep for more than a couple hours at a time (if that), but he'll pretty much stay in place until morning.

He'll build a fire (using his lighter and whatever brush he can collect) close to the beach, then retreat to the jungle and wait for an hour to see if it attracts any drones.

Assuming nothing calamitous happens, he'll enjoy being warm, dry off any of his stuff that might be damp, and scope out the stars. He's very knowledgeable about constellations and will try to figure out what hemisphere the island's in and nail down the cardinal directions. Once he's done that he'll sketch them in the sand with his new friend pointy stick.

He'll keep the fire going for three hours, then spend the rest of the night up a tree. He'll also be checking in on the walkie, trying to get ahold of Martin, every couple hours.

He deems the purple things inedible but does squish a few "blackberries" into his jacket. He'll try tasting a small amount of the liquid.

He'll leave the dodgeball behind.

Day 002

He'll take the clip, and he'll use the log for setting up camp. The tiny snake is getting hurled into the jungle though, sorry!

He'll pick a nice, protected nook against the cliff and set up another very minimal lean-to/tent from some branches and palm leaves.

He also finally caves in and drinks the water from the vertical stream, deciding that it looks clean enough and otherwise he might die from dehydration before the dysentery or whatever gets him.

He'll try to get a fire started (in the clearest area he can find to minimize the risks of it going wild, he'll also enclose the firepit by rocks from around the area) by rubbing a stick into a dry piece of wood in the appropriate way; if eventually successful, he'll be skewering the eel on some branch, cooking it over the fire and eating it.

Then he sits under his makeshift roof, once again with the hatched in his hand, and half-dozes through the night, still trying to keep wary of danger. He would still likely wake up from footsteps or noises close to him, but he is quite tired and will probably pass out more completely toward the morning.

Taking the vines and the mango (but not the mystery fruit, and also not the berries)!

Will she be able to get any sense of which direction the quieter, sharper source is coming from?

Question!

So, the drone is to the east of him — can he tell from the sound of it which direction it's going? Like, is it also heading further east or is the sound too faint/faraway/covered by animal sounds to get any of that kind of info?

Well, it's lucky there's a toilet to be sick on. Martin will spend... a good while just being sick and miserable and self-pitying. He'll probably even have himself a little cry as this cursed flesh prison of his rebels. He misses the apocalypse. He didn't have to eat or drink. Can he go back to that, please?

He knows he's running out of options to get out of here and he's still pretty darn certain that help isn't coming for him. If he can manage to not be making use of the gross toilet for a little while during the day, he'll use his faux-leather jacket to wrap around the bar that looks the rustiest, sit down, plant his feet on the bars and use his legs to pull on it. He's a pretty big guy who spent god only knows how long walking from Scotland to London through the fearpocalypse. He has more faith in his legs than his arms to actually accomplish anything here if it's going to be any sort of possible.

EDIT: Because Squalo offered some additional suggestions... Martin will also try checking under the mattress to see if there's some trap door or hole that he's missed there. He'll also try to just physically push the door up in spite of the deadbolts. He won't spend very long on that if it's clear the locks are for more than just show.

Excellent! Jet will:

-Pocket the bone in his jacket pocket
-Traverse the river with...reasonable care
-Take the dead squid and the tangled fishing line
-Catch the crab and tie it with what he can of the fishing line (still tangled)
-Leave the large crab and the dead jellyfish and the bottlecap...
-Take the partial hemp net
Ending the morning with one pocket partially filled and a handful of...squid. Plus a 'pet' crab (inhumanely held tbh)

-He'll take the whelk shell...and shove the squid in it. That's going in his other largest pocket
-He'll take the partial turtle shell, would that be a good bludgeoning weapon for the fiesty crab and the small crab he has inhumanely tied and not killed?

Can the transceiver case be opened?

Taking all the items with her, picking as many rosehips as she can because she's reasonably sure that's safe to eat. Sadly I don't think she has the knowledge to recognize water spinach.

Stopping at the stream to build herself a very quick, very basic shelter from sticks, leaves, and whatever rope-like plants might be available. Then she'll follow the animal tracks in search of more food sources.

IC DATES:
STARTING SQUARE: VII.X.24.
ENDING SQUARE: ????
DETAILS: Kokichi and Lalo spend Night 001 at their camp, possibly being joined by Jet if he makes it to their location without issue. Kokichi's a chronic insomniac with trust issues, but he'll at least pretend to sleep most of the night and probably actually pass out for a while despite his paranoia just from being worn out.

In the morning, Kokichi leads them back along the river moving west, giving the excuse that he saw fish and they can try using the hook and makeshift pole he found to catch some. They can dig around for some bugs or worms for bait. They'll take their time moving west, stopping occasionally (for long stretches of time, thanks Lalo) to try fishing. Since there's only one pole, he'll let Lalo be the fishing dad and poke around the areas thoroughly while he waits. He'll probably slip away occasionally despite Lalo's best efforts to search the area more thoroughly, but he'll stay fairly close and won't ever go for too long so he doesn't risk getting caught on his own.

Kokichi's main goal is looking for any sign of the drone he heard yesterday. He's keeping an ear out for the sound of it and looking for any sign of the drones or wherever they return to. How far they get will probably depend on whether they encounter any drones or any other obstacles.

Day 2

[personal profile] salamanca 2023-05-22 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
Lalo and Kokichi (and possibly Jet too? Exciting!) will head west along the river. They will move at a g l a c i a l l y slow pace, and if they find a good fishing spot, Lalo will stop them there for 4 - 6 hours. He is very aware Kokichi is lying about the fish and is determined to make him pay for it by getting him up at the ass-crack of dawn to sit still in one place and not move for several hours. :) He will thoroughly search wherever they stop — he's not really looking for anything specific, so much as just anything that stands out or is unusual.

He'll try NOT to let Kokichi out of his sight this time, and may have to leave his fishing spot to wrangle/collect Kokichi if/when he, probably inevitably, sneaks/runs off.
