Search Requests

SEARCH REQUESTS

At game start, the map is completely unexplored and covered by a "fog of war" obscuring its features. New characters will be randomly dropped onto the island's shores; from there, to uncover tiles on the map and figure out more about where they are, search requests are required to document movement, attempt to uncover hidden materials and passages, discover or confront dangers, find old ruins and create new settlements, and potentially, solve puzzles related to the mystery of the island itself.

RULES AND GUIDELINES

  • Search requests are a required mechanic of this game. A search request for the current AC cycle must be submitted in order to pass AC without a strike.
  • Mistakes in search requests will never be penalized. Don't be afraid to eyeball a distance or make an approximate guess; if the math doesn't quite match up, or the path doesn't exist, I will offer alternate destinations and work with you in order to decide how the search request will resolve.
  • Search requests will rarely be immediately fatal. Unless your character is doing something intentionally reckless, I will do my best to offer paths of escape for any sudden dangers that arise.
  • You can be as precise or as vague as you want. If you want to exactly plot out the squares your character will travel through and search every IC day, that is totally fine. It's also fine to simply report that your character is staying in one place all month, or to give a starting point and a desired destination, with a general request to search a wide area. Just note that, the more vague you are in your request, the more I will extrapolate to fill in the blanks.
  • Retroactive/backdated search requests are allowed. They just can't be used for the current month's AC if they fall outside of the current month's AC period, or overwrite a previously submitted search request. Forward-dated search requests are also allowed as long as they fall within the same IC day that the request was posted (for example, if you post a search request on IC Day 30 morning, you can make that search request last for the entirety of IC day 30, not just the morning of).
  • Thoroughly searching a square, rather than just traveling through it, halves movement through that square. So if you choose to search every square along a path, you'll only travel half as far as someone moving with purpose to a destination. Remember that simply traveling through a square will still fully reveal it.
  • IC Days are split into three 8-hour increments. Each of these corresponds to one OOC day. Morning is from 4AM -> 11:59AM, Day is from 12PM -> 7:59PM, and Night is 8PM -> 3:59AM.
  • Several examples of search requests are provided below to help illustrate how they work. If you still have questions, please ask them in the FAQ (or in your search request!).

All new characters will be given a toplevel to this post. To submit a search request, fill out the below form and copy/paste it as a response to your toplevel.

IC DATES: The IC dates the search request covers (I would also recommend putting this in the subject line to make it easier to keyword search later). You can use whole days, partial days, or a combination of either. To verify what IC days line up with real-world days and events, consult the Calendar.

STARTING SQUARE: The square your character is starting their search request on, format TILE.COLUMN.ROW. This should line up with your previous search request, or your starting location if newly arrived/revived.

ENDING SQUARE: The square your character is ending their search request on. If you're not sure where they'll end up (the area is unexplored/your character has a vague idea of where they want to go/you're not sure on the math/etc.), you can give a more rough answer here. Something like "they want to make it to Tile II," or "as close to II.AA.3 as possible" are perfectly valid answers.

DETAILS: The meat of your request. This is where you describe:
  1. The path your character is taking,
  2. The squares you want them to search,
  3. Any special actions your character is taking during this period of time (or inaction), and
  4. Any other special notes or questions you might have about this request.
Again, you can provide as much or as little information as you want; saying that your character is simply moving from point A to point B without searching anything is 100% acceptable.

IC DATES: Day 7 (day and night)
STARTING SQUARE: II.DD.27
ENDING SQUARE: II.FF.32
DETAILS: Same as the morning, with the usual addition of searching for a sleeping tree, and the new addition of tending to her wound. She'll eat her saved coconut tonight, too.

IC DATES: Night 006
STARTING SQUARE: IX.R.12
ENDING SQUARE: IX.T.13 (or however far he'd get in two hours while searching each square)
DETAILS: Those nickels could be useful later, so after examining them — noting what pictures are on both sides, any dates that can be made out — he'll pocket them.

Stumbling around a jungle in the dark seems more risky than sticking to the beach right now, so he'll start to follow the coastline southward, still on the lookout for any of the aforementioned (signs of people/animals, useful items, etc.). If he happens upon anything that might warrant getting a better look, he'll use the flashlight function on his phone. Otherwise he's relying on moonlight to see by.

Morning 004

[personal profile] hyakuoku 2023-06-05 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
IC DATES: Morning 004 > Day 004
STARTING SQUARE: IX.T.9
ENDING SQUARE: IX.T.11?
DETAILS: Senku spends a couple of hours building a solar still to purify ocean water, using a hole in the ground, the tarp, some vegetation (whatever leaves/kelp/grass they find; the kind doesn't matter), the beer bottle, and one of the water bottles that he and Randvi have (he'll use the other one once it's empty).

After that, they're going to try to hack the keypad to that one bungalow.
If the callsigns don't work, he will try the extremely video game trick of looking for ANY CLUE that points to what the code is in the surrounding area, starting with the other houses.

meadqueen: (Default)

[personal profile] meadqueen 2023-06-05 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
IC DATES: Day 4 morning -> Day 4 day
STARTING SQUARE: IX.X.11
ENDING SQUARE: IX.X.11
DETAILS: Okay, she's gotta go guard dog Senku through his clue search, which will probably take the rest of the morning block.

Afterward, can she get under the bungalow? If it's raised there might be an access hatch down there.

ETA: just saw Senku’s reply, she's following him on his clue search expedition but obviously not searching so thoroughly because she's looking for threats.

She will take the second to last hour of the day block to search under the bungalow and then they'll head back to the airfield.

Day 005 --> Morning 006

[personal profile] salamanca 2023-06-05 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
First off: I am SO SORRY. I'm happy to delete + repost if you want. I thought it looked kinda weird but I thought I just didn't have my contacts in...

IC DATES: Day 005 --> Morning 006
STARTING SQUARE: VII.C.25
ENDING SQUARE: ???
DETAILS: First off, weird question! I don't think he'd realistically be able to tell this (esp not from four berries) bc it's not like he's a botanist or anything, but just for shits and giggles — what species of juniper are the berries? Just wondering since some are toxic and some are not! This is just for my own curiosity; he'll leave them behind regardless.

Taking: flint, steel shovel, the polished stones, one handful of electronics salvage, let's say two of the wires? Also Martin's player said he could have the syringe Martin found.
Leaving: plastic fork, the berries, the rest of the computer debris

Is the broken power cable long enough to be useful to tie somebody's hands up? If it is, he'll take that too. If not, he'll leave it.

Lalo has heard people on the network talking about the drones being used to open the cell doors, so he'll take whichever drone is the least destroyed and try to see if he can open the cell door that way; he'll sink probably an an hour and a half into doing this if it doesn't work right away. If/when it does work, he'll go inside and search the cell. If it still isn't working after about 90 minutes of trying different drones (or what's left of them), holding them in different positions, etc, he'll eventually give up, drink some water, force himself to eat some grapes because he's probably starving by now, and hope they don't make him sick. Then he'll sleep through whatever's left of the rest of the night until morning. If it is successful then he'll go inside, search the cell, and same thing — eat, drink, sleep.

In the morning, he'll either search the last cell after the doors open it (if the previous day's attempts were unsuccessful) then say his goodbyes from the others and depart, heading in the direction of the northeast coast, ROUGHLY in the direction of the cell where Cohle was being held. I'm aiming to get him near thereabouts eventually, but it's not like he has exact directions so his path might not be the most straightforward. If the previous day's search attempts were successful, then he'll say goodbye and leave first thing in the morning.

He will thoroughly search every square on the way. In particular he's looking out for poisonous plants (plants that would be recognizable as toxic to someone who isn't a scientist or a plant expert but generally has fairly good wilderness survival skills), anything big enough to be a vessel to carry his items in, and anything that stands out as very unusual or out of place. He also will be reasonably cautious and will try to avoid difficult terrain even if it takes longer bc he's not in a hurry — however, he's determined to get to where he's headed eventually so if he has to traverse difficult terrain or do something risky to get there, then he will! He'd just prefer not to if there's another option.

IC DATES: Day 5 (morning) -> Day 5 (night)
STARTING SQUARE: VII.C.25

DETAILS: One day, Martin will leave this godforsaken cell block. That day is not today.

Day 4 -> Day 6

[personal profile] trialbyliar 2023-06-05 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
IC DATES: Morning 004 -> Day/Night 006
STARTING SQUARE: VII.C.25.
ENDING SQUARE: VII.C.25.
DETAILS: Kokichi will take it easy in the relative safety of the cell building for a bit, letting his injured ankle heal up and waiting for Martin to be in better shape. He'll set the cooler outside to collect rainwater so they can stay hydrated and poke around the nearby area occasionally to forage for food or anything useful or unusual they might have missed, but otherwise he's staying put for a while and just monitoring everyone else's situation on the network.

On the morning of Day 6, they'll head out to search for an alternate place to camp, moving very slowly to accommodate all their various injuries.

VII.D.24
VII.E.23
VII.F.22
VII.G.21
VII.G.20

Kokichi will let the others focus on navigating while he keeps an eye out for anything useful or notable on the way. Once they get to a good spot to camp, he'll search the area thoroughly while the others are focused on setting up. Priorities are food, potential containers, and anything man-made.

Day 6

[personal profile] lonelynotforsaken 2023-06-05 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
IC DATES: Day 6 (morning) > Day 6 (day/night)
STARTING SQUARE: VII.C.25
ENDING SQUARE: VII.G.20
DETAILS:
In the morning, Martin, Kokichi, and Jet will continue resting up and drinking water/eating the food Lalo brought. They'll say goodbye to Lalo, and then rally themselves to start heading out.

VII.D.24
VII.E.23
VII.F.22
VII.G.21
VII.G.20

Martin is moving very slowly. Between his current state, Jet's knee, and Kokichi's ankle, they're taking their time to avoid further injury and to thoroughly search the squares they're passing through. Martin will be looking for a walking stick to keep himself from falling over, as well as food and any other vessels to carry and potentially boil water in.

Once they get to the bank of the river, he'll be looking around for a good spot to make camp. The rest of his day will be spent resting and trying to help build a shelter with whatever sticks and leaves they can find. If the water looks safe, he'll also bathe himself and rinse his clothes as much as he can in the river, just to get the grime, sand, and salf off, if nothing else.

GORGEOUS ART THANK YOU <3

Okay, so basically the danger is less that the whole thing might come crashing down with him inside, and more that everything on the interior that could be used as foothold could break without warning, did I get that correctly?

Also... eugh, he will not be eating the dead rodent.

He's going to move toward the maybe-caldera, still careful just in case some volcano-worshipping locals are laying in ambush... or, like, the ground gives or something. Speaking of which, if the ground starts looking suspicious, he'll use the blunt end of his spear-stick to check it as he walks.

He's going to press on until it's too hot/dangerous to continue, or he can get a proper look at the caldera -- mostly he's interested whether the volcano appears active or not, but he's also keeping an eye out for anything useful as usual.

Day 8

[personal profile] desperate_times_right 2023-06-05 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
IC DATES: Day 8 morning
STARTING SQUARE: II.N.9
ENDING SQUARE: however far she gets
DETAILS: Chloe is heading east along the shore, either until she runs into something or it's night. At the start of Day 8 Night she’ll head inland and look for some out of the way place (behind foliage, under an outcropping etc) where she can sleep.

She’s searching the area mostly for signs that people have been there recently, since she still thinks guys are after her (well, potentially they are but they're different guys lol).

Oops, I must have miscalculated the timing; my bad! She'll stop moving before nightfall, so let's just say she stops at the river. She'll use the remaining time to look for fish!
