Search Requests
SEARCH REQUESTS
At game start, the map is completely unexplored and covered by a "fog of war" obscuring its features. New characters will be randomly dropped onto the island's shores; from there, to uncover tiles on the map and figure out more about where they are, search requests are required to document movement, attempt to uncover hidden materials and passages, discover or confront dangers, find old ruins and create new settlements, and potentially, solve puzzles related to the mystery of the island itself.
RULES AND GUIDELINES
- Search requests are a required mechanic of this game. A search request for the current AC cycle must be submitted in order to pass AC without a strike.
- Mistakes in search requests will never be penalized. Don't be afraid to eyeball a distance or make an approximate guess; if the math doesn't quite match up, or the path doesn't exist, I will offer alternate destinations and work with you in order to decide how the search request will resolve.
- Search requests will rarely be immediately fatal. Unless your character is doing something intentionally reckless, I will do my best to offer paths of escape for any sudden dangers that arise.
- You can be as precise or as vague as you want. If you want to exactly plot out the squares your character will travel through and search every IC day, that is totally fine. It's also fine to simply report that your character is staying in one place all month, or to give a starting point and a desired destination, with a general request to search a wide area. Just note that, the more vague you are in your request, the more I will extrapolate to fill in the blanks.
- Retroactive/backdated search requests are allowed. They just can't be used for the current month's AC if they fall outside of the current month's AC period, or overwrite a previously submitted search request. Forward-dated search requests are also allowed as long as they fall within the same IC day that the request was posted (for example, if you post a search request on IC Day 30 morning, you can make that search request last for the entirety of IC day 30, not just the morning of).
- Thoroughly searching a square, rather than just traveling through it, halves movement through that square. So if you choose to search every square along a path, you'll only travel half as far as someone moving with purpose to a destination. Remember that simply traveling through a square will still fully reveal it.
- IC Days are split into three 8-hour increments. Each of these corresponds to one OOC day. Morning is from 4AM -> 11:59AM, Day is from 12PM -> 7:59PM, and Night is 8PM -> 3:59AM.
- Several examples of search requests are provided below to help illustrate how they work. If you still have questions, please ask them in the FAQ (or in your search request!).

SUBMISSIONS
All new characters will be given a toplevel to this post. To submit a search request, fill out the below form and copy/paste it as a response to your toplevel.
IC DATES: The IC dates the search request covers (I would also recommend putting this in the subject line to make it easier to keyword search later). You can use whole days, partial days, or a combination of either. To verify what IC days line up with real-world days and events, consult the Calendar.
STARTING SQUARE: The square your character is starting their search request on, format TILE.COLUMN.ROW. This should line up with your previous search request, or your starting location if newly arrived/revived.
ENDING SQUARE: The square your character is ending their search request on. If you're not sure where they'll end up (the area is unexplored/your character has a vague idea of where they want to go/you're not sure on the math/etc.), you can give a more rough answer here. Something like "they want to make it to Tile II," or "as close to II.AA.3 as possible" are perfectly valid answers.
DETAILS: The meat of your request. This is where you describe:
- The path your character is taking,
- The squares you want them to search,
- Any special actions your character is taking during this period of time (or inaction), and
- Any other special notes or questions you might have about this request.
Martin Blackwood | The Magnus Archives
Day 1
STARTING SQUARE: XII.C.4
ENDING SQUARE: VII (whatever square he can reach in the course of 3 hours)
DETAILS: Martin is generally following the coastline, heading northwest. He is doing a very thorough search of all squares along the way. He'll look around, shout for Jon, and then try to draw an arrow in the sand (above any obvious tideline) that indicates the direction he's heading. He's keeping a general eye out for signs of life and plants that might indicate the presence of freshwater.

Day 3
STARTING SQUARE: VII.C.25
ENDING SQUARE: VII.C.25
DETAILS: Martin spends his morning being miserable, then watching Jet tussle with a drone. THEN FREE HIM LIKE A GODDAMN AMERICAN HERO.
Martin will inchworm/roll himself out of the cell before Jet ushers the drone over to Kokichi's cell. SUPER don't trust that door not to immediately slam shut again. He's drinking what water Jet brought and continuing to inch his way toward the exit. Is he in his underwear? Yes. Does he care? Maybe a little. But he is desperate to get out of this building, at least for a little while. He's hoping he'll be able to see a beautifully-flowing, pristine mountain river just outside. From the ground. He's not standing up without help. He's also not actually getting anywhere without assistance. So, he's just going to crawl as far as he can while periodically lapsing into unconscious.
Day 4
STARTING SQUARE: VII.C.25
ENDING SQUARE: VII.C.25
DETAILS: We continue the 'wait for water and resist the siren call of death' progression. Martin's doing nothing apart from responding to texts. He doesn't have the energy or thermoregulation to spare for much else.
Day 5
STARTING SQUARE: VII.C.25
ENDING SQUARE: VII.C.25
DETAILS: One day, Martin will leave this godforsaken cell block. That day is not today.
Day 6
STARTING SQUARE: VII.C.25
ENDING SQUARE: VII.G.20
DETAILS:
In the morning, Martin, Kokichi, and Jet will continue resting up and drinking water/eating the food Lalo brought. They'll say goodbye to Lalo, and then rally themselves to start heading out.
VII.D.24
VII.E.23
VII.F.22
VII.G.21
VII.G.20
Martin is moving very slowly. Between his current state, Jet's knee, and Kokichi's ankle, they're taking their time to avoid further injury and to thoroughly search the squares they're passing through. Martin will be looking for a walking stick to keep himself from falling over, as well as food and any other vessels to carry and potentially boil water in.
Once they get to the bank of the river, he'll be looking around for a good spot to make camp. The rest of his day will be spent resting and trying to help build a shelter with whatever sticks and leaves they can find. If the water looks safe, he'll also bathe himself and rinse his clothes as much as he can in the river, just to get the grime, sand, and salf off, if nothing else.

Day 007
STARTING SQUARE: VII.G.20
ENDING SQUARE: VII.G.20
DETAILS: Martin is staying close to the campsite for the first half of the morning, checking for signs of the bear and trying to repair any damage from its snuffling around in the night. He'll also set up a funnel with leaves to be able to fill their cooler with water more efficiently and wait to see if he is going to regret his life choices in drinking directly from the river. He'll also just observe the river and banks for a bit to see if it seems to be a frequently-visited area. He's especially looking trails/skids/tracks that might indicate a common entry location for the water, either on his side of the bank or the opposite bank.
After that he'll be searching nearby squares for food and things to boil water in once more. He's also searching for some sturdy sticks and whatever cloth he can find to try to make braces for Jet's knee and Kokichi's ankle. Also on the lookout for something to carry things in beyond their cooler.
As things move into the day, he'll return to the camp and work on building a better shelter with whatever supplies he can find. Maybe add some river grasses to the base to lie on, if he can find that. Any food he's found is going to be placed well away from the shelter. Just in case.

STARTING SQUARE: VII.G.20
ENDING SQUARE: Somewhere west/southwest of that.
DETAILS: Martin will spend the morning making a fire, preparing and cooking the fish (after radioing someone for advice), and trying to turn his faux-leather jacket into a bag.
He will cut the fluffy ruff off his jacket and sacrifice that as kindling (and one piece of coal) to get the fire going, then he'll use his knife to make some strategic cuts to make tying bits of his jacket together feasible. He'll also sacrifice the denim-ish trousers he found, making them into a strap/cutting bits as-needed into ties. The ultimate goal is to have a sort of almost-backpack. But he'll get as close as he can to that if it's not fully feasible.
Once they've eaten, drunk, and they've done what they can to make braces for Kokichi and Jet, the group will get their things together and head west, generally following the river upstream. If any of the hills look accessible along the way, they'd like to get some height, as well, to see what's going on in the surrounding landscape.

Day 9
STARTING SQUARE: VII.A.21
ENDING SQUARE: To the west
DETAILS: Martin and the crew will be continuing west. They'll be aiming for the source of the river as a landmark, but try to keep to the foothills until they have to go down into the jungle to reach it. They'll rest there for a short spell to look around and refill their water before continuing west.
Martin, particularly, will be keeping an eye out for predators or signs of predators. He knows that dinosaur and bear are both in the general vicinity, and he suspects there are others. Still moving slowly as a group, trying to be careful not to injure themselves further or move Martin past the point of dizzy exhaustion.

Day 010
STARTING SQUARE: VI.FF.20
ENDING SQUARE: VI.FF.20
DETAILS: 3 dudes, chilling in a hot springs. Martin is just recuperating today and preparing himself to head over the mountain ridge tomorrow. He'll work on keeping the fire he made yesterday going and check the spring to see if there are actually fish in it. If there are, he'll use the net Kokichi picked up to try to net them some fish. If there aren't any apparent fish in the spring, he'll again search the area for food. He's going to be moving carefully and quietly as he can, though, expecting this might be a hang out place for wildlife. He'll also take a nice bath in the hot spring at some point.

Day 011
STARTING SQUARE: VI.FF.20
ENDING SQUARE: To the West
DETAILS: Over the mountain ridge! The boys will be traveling very slowly and carefully to avoid adding more injuries to their party. If there are any unstable-looking bits, they'll test them with Martin's bone staff or Jet's pipe. If they come across any steep drops, they'll either go around, if possible, or carefully help each other down. They'll avoid full climbing, if at all possible. If not, then they'll go for spots where it seems like it would be the shortest climb. They'll take frequent rests, as needed, to avoid anyone becoming overly fatigued in the climb and descent.
Once they're down the other side, providing they made it safely, they'll head west again for the sources of the river they saw and re-up their water supplies before following along the riverbank. Continuing Martin will continue to move cautiously and watch for predators.

Day 12-15
STARTING SQUARE: VI.R.18
ENDING SQUARE: Westward, westward, ever west. And if they hit the beach, south from there.
DETAILS: The group will continue trying to follow the river to the west. If it enters harder terrain, they'll try to avoid that, but make an attempt to pick up the river after. Continuing to move at a slow and steady pace, keeping alert for potential danger, traps, or other people.
Martin will be specifically looking for more signs of the translucent fur and any sort of pit traps, snares, or stakes. He is on very high alert after what happened to 'Ben.' He's also concerned about big predators, so while he'll attempt to fish each evening, any food they pick up along the way will be bundled up and put into a tree a ways away from the camp, up in a tree. He'll ask Kokichi to help with that, giving him a boost to get him up there.
In addition, they'll be starting a project to spend some of their mornings drying out food they find (using the salt chunk Martin has where they can) to try to prepare for when they'll be away from the river.

Day 015-016
STARTING SQUARE: IX.T.9
ENDING SQUARE: IX.T.9
DETAILS: Martin is starting Operation Waystations. This begins with gathering the actual supplies he needs for said waystation creation. With the fishing gear he's acquired with Kokichi and Jet while they've been in the jungle, he'll head out set fish traps and actively fish from the early hours of the morning to the afternoon each day. His goal is to catch as many fish as possible, and he'll gut and descale fish, as needed by the ocean before carrying his haul back to the airfield. He'll use that to help feed people at the airfield. Any haul left over will be put toward making fish jerky.
He'll be making use of the rack/drying station that K set up for his efforts. He will sit with the jerky whenever he's smoking it to avoid animals coming to steal it and will bring it into whatever hangar people are sleeping in overnight to store it. While the storm is going to disrupt things, his aim is to develop a stockpile of fish jerky... and dried anything that people bring him to dry out with the fish for their stores.

Day 017
STARTING SQUARE: IX.T.9
ENDING SQUARE: IX.T.9
DETAILS: Martin will spend the morning fishing again. When he sees that darkness on the horizon, he'll head back with his catch and smoke the fish during the afternoon. While that's happening and after, he'll look around the base for anything that could be used as a vessel for catching water. Ideally, not rusted things or anything that's going to require tools to fix. He wants to try to set out some stuff to catch the coming rain!

Day 18-19
STARTING SQUARE: IX.T.9
ENDING SQUARE: IX.T.9
DETAILS: With the storm, Martin is staying as much in the hangar as he possibly can. He will also make an effort to keep everyone else staying at the airbase away from the metal walls and dig into his existing stores of fish to keep them fed. He'll be going just a little bit stir crazy stuck with people in a confined space, so he will, periodically, check outside. Ostensibly to fetch water, but also to see what the sky is doing and if there are any angry whales roaming about in the clouds.

Day 020
STARTING SQUARE: IX.T.9
ENDING SQUARE: IX.T.9
DETAILS: Stir-crazy Martin has decided the best use of his time is going to be sorting rubble in one of the smaller hangars, looking for anything that seems to be useable building materials. His ultimate goal is to find enough wood or metal and requisite screws or nails to construct a large barrel/trough/cistern that he can put outside to catch rainwater.

Day 021
STARTING SQUARE: IX.T.9
ENDING SQUARE: IX.T.9
DETAILS: Martin will be checking on K's fishing weir at the river to see if it survived the storm. And also just to check the condition of the river. Whether or not the weir has survived, Martin will be bringing his own fishing gear and will spend the day fishing in the river and scouring the bank for anything that's come down from the jungle.

Day 022
STARTING SQUARE: IX.T.9
ENDING SQUARE: X.D.22 (ultimately)
DETAILS: Martin is going with Senku and Levi to rescue Maddy. They're going to be using the raft to paddle around the bay to her square. Levi will have dragged the raft to the ocean the day before and they will not be sailing it down the first river to avoid potential danger. Martin will insist on staying relatively close to shore (no more than a square or so away from it. He'll have his bone spear with him. In the event that something attacks the raft along the way, he's going to do his best to stab it. He's keeping a general watch out for anything dangerous along the shore, but he's mostly focused on getting to Maddy as quickly as possible.

It's hear that Martin will part ways with the rest of the group. He'll spend the remaining 4 hours of the morning just recovering from the ordeal of rescuing Maddy. Mostly by sleeping. He'll be spending the day (after eating and drinking) hunting around for small, flatish pieces of driftwood that he can use something pointy to carve into.
He'll be making a little six panel comic with Maddy's assistance once she's received some better medical attention:
PANEL 1 - Stick figures on a raft. One stick figure is in a girl's dress and has a limb at an odd angle with a sad, crying face.
PANEL 2 - Shark fin moving toward the raft with an angry face shark.
PANEL 3 - All stick figures on the raft have open, sad mouths like they're shouting.
PANEL 4 - Bigger shark with tentacle face swimming over. Smaller shark has a scared face.
PANEL 5 - Bigger shark's fins chasing little shark fin across the waves.
PANEL 6 - Smiling raft people with a heart and Martin's (LO431Y) and Maddy's (MZ114C) callsigns.

Day 024
STARTING SQUARE: IX.T.9
ENDING SQUARE: IX.DD.14
DETAILS: Martin and Jet are going to make a pilgrimage to the Enemy River to the east so that Martin can chuck his message in a bottle out to sea where the river (he thinks) will push it out a little more and further east. Before they do that, though, Jet is going to try plugging in his screechy transceiver and holding his radio underwater in the surf or in the nearby river if there's no hearing anything over the crash of waves. If they can't hear anything above water, they'll try sticking their heads into the water to see if the screeching is less screechy and maybe more like whale songs when they're broadcast in the water.

Day 025 > 026/027
STARTING SQUARE: IX.X.11
ENDING SQUARE: VI.A.10
DETAILS: Martin and Jet make their way from the bungalows to the airstrip where they'll pick up Jet's remaining MRE rations, two travel water bottles, a small briefcase, and a beach carry case (suitcase-like), along with 8 days of fish jerky rations (3 days worth for each case and one each for them) and the water cooler Martin was carrying before, and then set off north. They will be sticking close to the shade of the trees during the day, but keep to a beach route for ease of movement. If they see fruit in the trees or other food-type things, they'll pause to assess and gather it if it doesn't seem obviously poisonous. In the evenings, Martin will turn his bone staff into a makeshift fishing rod with his fishing line and jelly lure to try to catch them fish while Jet gathers wood and gets a fire going.
Once they reach the river, they're going to look for any likely safe crossing points.

Day 027 > ???
STARTING SQUARE: VI.J.13
ENDING SQUARE: Somewhere to the north (but probably to the east first)
DETAILS: Martin and Jet are continuing their trek along the side of the river looking for somewhere to cross it. They will go deeper to the east in the jungle if they need to. As they walk, they'll again try out Jet's fancy transceiver upgrade, this time with Jet walking ahead of Martin at increasing intervals (but not out of sight). Martin will give Jet his own transceiver for JUST IN CASE something happens and they're separated somehow. They want to see if maybe it's some sort of weird proximity issue since it got less screechy when Martin was holding it instead of Jet.
Additionally, if they're able to cross the river at a safe point, they'll be looking for a way up the mountain to the north and, upon reaching any kind of ridge, will be looking to see if it's possible to get to the hotel by walking along that ridgeline.

Day 028
STARTING SQUARE: VI.L.14
ENDING SQUARE: To the northwest!
DETAILS: Jet and Martin are going to note the Troubling Hum that starts their morning off and spend their breakfast, such as it is, looking out over the jungle to try to see what the hell sparked that sound/sensation and is disturbing the life on the island. If there's nothing apparent to the northwest, they will descend the ridge and work on getting themselves through the jungle and across the second branch of the stream up north.
They'll keep Jet's transceiver attachment plugged in to see if it's acting any differently from the day before. Martin, in particular, if going to have an eye out for potential dangers. He's had too many animal attacks in the jungle, and he doesn't know what happened to that camp they found. So, he's on paranoia watch.

Day 029
STARTING SQUARE: II.B.28
ENDING SQUARE: ???
DETAILS: Martin and Jet are going to investigate the sounds they heard from the transceiver yesterday near the muddy riverbank! They'll treat it like a game of hot and cold. Jet will keep watch a little ways away so they don't get surprised by another crocodile and to try to minimize the screeching. Martin will walk the riverbank seeing if the sound is more or less frequent/pronounced in any particular location. If it is, he'll stop, and he and Jet will make a thorough search of that area, even going so far as to dig into the mud to see if the attachment is maybe some sort of metal detector.

Day 030-Day 035
STARTING SQUARE: II.C.18
ENDING SQUARE: North and east
DETAILS: We're mainly trying to catch up to the current IC day, so montage!
Martin and Jet will take the morning of Day 030 to find a good piece of wood to do some carving on. Jet will make a crude map that instructs someone at this point on how to get down to the base. Martin, meanwhile, is going to collect rocks and make a giant arrow in the sand that points toward where they're going to stick the sign at the interface between the sand and jungle. Using the One Nail that Martin has acquired, they're going to nail the sign to the sturdiest looking tree they can find (using a rock) at the sand/jungle interface, facing toward the sand.
And then they're off! Martin will keep the transceiver upgrade plugged in while they're moving and take it out at night. If the upgrade goes off, they'll veer a little bit to check, but if it takes them too far off course, they're not going to pursue it. Jet will make a note in the crude map he's drawing for where those occurrences happen, though.
They'll proceed along the sand/jungle interface while keeping an eye out for danger. Be that animals or sinkholes. They are heading north/northeast for about a two days or until they run into another river, whichever comes first. Martin will make a concerted effort at any river to catch a good haul of fish for them to cook and carry along their journey. Once they hit a river, they will look for a safe crossing point and proceed to cross there, even if this means heading into the jungle. If they DO have to head into the jungle, they will be cautious as hell because they know these are the Cabin Gremlin's hunting grounds. Anything weird, they will stop and turn back to reevaluate.
Ultimately, they're trying to find the point where they're two-ish days away from any water source, which is where they will set up their first waystation. The waystation will include:
- travel water bottle
- small briefcase with 3 days of fish jerky rations inside
- Also inside the briefcase: A crude map of the island with the waystation's location, cardinal directions, and some features that someone could use to help orient themselves.
- Also inside the briefcase: A note from Martin in English that reads: "WAYSTATION #01: Supplies are for you. Please take them! Contact network and let them know Waystation #01 has been used." It will be accompanied by simple depictions of a stick figure digging at a mound, then raising the water bottle and food above its head. Then a simple drawing of the transceiver and an arrow pointing at the button that will let someone talk to the network. He will add in his own (LO431Y), Jet's (JK002N), Randvi's (VL121R), Steph's (BT612L), and K's (KD201D) current callsigns.
These will be buried in the sand and a big stone circle placed around it. While they've been traveling, during the night, Martin and Jet will have found another good piece of wood and carved a big "#01" into it. Martin will have been specifically keeping an eye out more nails or things that can be used as nails so that they can affix the sign to a stick and hammer it into the ground over top of the waystation. If all else fails, Martin will use some of the rope he's collected to tie the sign to a sturdy stick and do the same.
