Search Requests
SEARCH REQUESTS
At game start, the map is completely unexplored and covered by a "fog of war" obscuring its features. New characters will be randomly dropped onto the island's shores; from there, to uncover tiles on the map and figure out more about where they are, search requests are required to document movement, attempt to uncover hidden materials and passages, discover or confront dangers, find old ruins and create new settlements, and potentially, solve puzzles related to the mystery of the island itself.
RULES AND GUIDELINES
- Search requests are a required mechanic of this game. A search request for the current AC cycle must be submitted in order to pass AC without a strike.
- Mistakes in search requests will never be penalized. Don't be afraid to eyeball a distance or make an approximate guess; if the math doesn't quite match up, or the path doesn't exist, I will offer alternate destinations and work with you in order to decide how the search request will resolve.
- Search requests will rarely be immediately fatal. Unless your character is doing something intentionally reckless, I will do my best to offer paths of escape for any sudden dangers that arise.
- You can be as precise or as vague as you want. If you want to exactly plot out the squares your character will travel through and search every IC day, that is totally fine. It's also fine to simply report that your character is staying in one place all month, or to give a starting point and a desired destination, with a general request to search a wide area. Just note that, the more vague you are in your request, the more I will extrapolate to fill in the blanks.
- Retroactive/backdated search requests are allowed. They just can't be used for the current month's AC if they fall outside of the current month's AC period, or overwrite a previously submitted search request. Forward-dated search requests are also allowed as long as they fall within the same IC day that the request was posted (for example, if you post a search request on IC Day 30 morning, you can make that search request last for the entirety of IC day 30, not just the morning of).
- Thoroughly searching a square, rather than just traveling through it, halves movement through that square. So if you choose to search every square along a path, you'll only travel half as far as someone moving with purpose to a destination. Remember that simply traveling through a square will still fully reveal it.
- IC Days are split into three 8-hour increments. Each of these corresponds to one OOC day. Morning is from 4AM -> 11:59AM, Day is from 12PM -> 7:59PM, and Night is 8PM -> 3:59AM.
- Several examples of search requests are provided below to help illustrate how they work. If you still have questions, please ask them in the FAQ (or in your search request!).

SUBMISSIONS
All new characters will be given a toplevel to this post. To submit a search request, fill out the below form and copy/paste it as a response to your toplevel.
IC DATES: The IC dates the search request covers (I would also recommend putting this in the subject line to make it easier to keyword search later). You can use whole days, partial days, or a combination of either. To verify what IC days line up with real-world days and events, consult the Calendar.
STARTING SQUARE: The square your character is starting their search request on, format TILE.COLUMN.ROW. This should line up with your previous search request, or your starting location if newly arrived/revived.
ENDING SQUARE: The square your character is ending their search request on. If you're not sure where they'll end up (the area is unexplored/your character has a vague idea of where they want to go/you're not sure on the math/etc.), you can give a more rough answer here. Something like "they want to make it to Tile II," or "as close to II.AA.3 as possible" are perfectly valid answers.
DETAILS: The meat of your request. This is where you describe:
- The path your character is taking,
- The squares you want them to search,
- Any special actions your character is taking during this period of time (or inaction), and
- Any other special notes or questions you might have about this request.
Day 026-027
STARTING SQUARE: IX.T.9
ENDING SQUARE: IX.T.9
DETAILS:
As mentioned, he's gonna snore all through Morning 026 and then finally get to work.
His main goal will be logging some trees again - as before, he'll be mostly focusing along the treeline between columns AA-EE, going deeper into the jungle as needed. He's looking for thicker and medium trees that would match what K would have described to him as needed for a new fishing weir (that may double as a primitive crossing/bridge).
He also wants to get some harpoons ready for Operation Burial At Sea as well as potentially spearing the wild pigs that keep attacking people (sorry Martin) - so he'll also be looking for thinner, young trees, straight offshoots and branches that could be fashioned into simple spears by sharpening (and maybe burning) one end.
He's not in a rush this time, and he will also spare some hours to help around the base with other things if needed (or if something new arises), and return to base to sleep at night, so I expect this will take him several days or more (at least the weir materials part; he'll want to have some spears ready asap in case of boar invasion but he can always make more later).

Starting Square: IX.T.9
Ending Square: IX.T.9
Duration: 40 hours
General Search Results:
While searching the treeline for suitable logs, Squalo notices several sets of two-toed hoofprints in the dirt, some straying further onto the sandy beach soil than others. These do seem reminiscent of boar tracks, but some of them are truly massive - like something a horse would make rather than a large pig. He doesn't spot any of the animals in question. He does manage to find a decently-sized grove of sturdy trees of lightweight wood, which make for excellent candidates for both construction of the weir/bridge and spears.

He picks up the tomatoes (probably eats them immediately), sturdy vine (to be used to reinforce the raft as needed), alligator clips, handsaw, caulk (to be put in the communal inventory), figs, chain, cravat, hex wrenches and pillowcase (to be used as a sort of rucksack for all these items!)
- What sort of the beach carry case is it, more like a suitcase or a sheath for umbrellas/chairs?
- How long has the horse been dead? Can it be salvaged for any still usable horse meat? (Don't judge him, he's from Sicily)
- Is there anything interesting about the six pieces of cut stone, are they more like runestones or just somebody trying to pave a path?
Finally, he's also going to take the transceiver upgrade and see if it fits any holes in his radio - if it does, he's shoving that shit in because why not! :)
Lumberjack adventures:
He'll aim to make about 10-15 spears first and put them in the communal inventory at the base so people can get armed against the boar army.
Then he will cut down and pile up a bunch of logs for the weir/bridge (he'll leave organizing the actual building of it to K, though he'll help him as needed!), probably somewhere around IX.EE.10-11. He'll probably fell a bit more than he thinks is needed just in case (maybe someone will want to do some bungalow repairs too).
Once that's done, he'll want to make about 15 more spears-"harpoons" for the raft trip.
He'll take breaks and return to base to eat/drink/sleep at night for however long it takes him to accomplish all this.

Answering questions first:
The transceiver upgrade slots into the SD-type hole at the top of his walkie and easily clicks into place. A new tab appears on the menu screen, marked "A/". Once selected, it opens to a blank, notepad-esque screen that allows for very basic text editing. Bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, intents, and font size changes are all available. Up to 1000 characters can be typed in this window, and text in the window remains if Squalo navigates away from it. In addition, a small "A/" button now appears next to all text transcripts of visible messages; this button moves the text into the text editor, replacing any text currently stored in the tab. There's a similar button in the text editor menu that allows for its contents to be exported directly as a message.
Squalo's lumberjack adventures are briefly put on hold when, after he cuts down the first tree, he finds it swarming with fourteen coconut crabs. They hit the ground with the fallen tree and immediately start skittering towards him like a kicked nest of ants.

From the new stuff, he takes mayo, glass cup and grapnel anchor for himself, and will put the plantains and cacao pod in the communal inventory. He will also very carefully taste the tomato-like fruits; if they turn out to be tomatoes he'll bring them back to base too.
Squalo will fight the crabs for some horse meat! He won't necessarily try to beat them all off, just shove them to one end so he can grab a cut himself, unless they don't want to cooperate, then he'll go all out. He's got the axe, a makeshift spear and that dueling cane he found on his first week. He's also a professional murderer, and while crabs aren't people, the skills should probably translate well enough.
And cool! Finally he can yell at people over text.
He is unimpressed by the nest of coconut crabs dropping down along with the tree, but he will still fight them! He'll use the same weapons as before, but thanks to their numbers he'll also try to use the environment a bit more -- get out of their immediate reach by jumping on tree trunks, rocks, lifting himself up into branches to avoid pincers and such, as well as using underhanded tactics like flipping the crabs over with one of his longer tools so he can aim at any soft junctures in the shell on the underside, etc.

Squalo valiantly fights the crabs on the dead horse - and the crabs fight back. Though Squalo is more than a match for his terrestrial crustacean opponents, hauling and fending off the pile of agitated animals takes a significant amount of time, and by the end of it there's not a lot of horse left to salvage. He can get a few bones, hooves, and hide from it, but no usable scraps of meat.
His fight with the falling nest of crabs, on the other hand, goes a lot better. Their agitation lasts just long enough to chase him to a stray boulder that he climbs on top of and get poked at, and then they seem to think better of the whole thing and scatter.

Damn, there goes his horse sausage. :( He'll take a section of the hide -- maybe somebody at base will be able to do something with it -- and leave the rest.
He'll also bring back more slain crabs for Randvi's stew though. >:(
Once the crab nest clears out, he'll be resuming his lumberjacking for the day as described earlier! How many days do you reckon he'll need for the spears, harpoons and weir+some additional logs? Somewhere between 3 and 5 I imagine? Since he'll be repeating the same thing daily I'd jump into the day after that for next search request.

General Search Results:
Squalo brings back a truly impressive haul of 120 pounds of coconut crab meat plus enough wood to accomplish his spear-making project. He'll need another three days, at least, to do all the rest.
no subject
He's not aware of the specific dangers of crab meat but also he does figure that seafood goes bad quick enough that multiple trips aren't viable, so he'll just haul as much of it as he can carry in one go back to base. It seems K is aware of it though so he'll probably make sure nobody gets food poisoning from that!
He'll spend days 029-031 cutting down the rest of the lumber for Team Science projects!

Squalo obtains as much lumber as he requires over these three days. While performing his lumberjacking duties, he observes on more than one occasion that he's being watched by curious, skittish wild pigs in the depths of the forest. He tends to see them more frequently close to tile X.

He'll definitely take note of their apparent location and inform Randvi about it in case she wants to set some traps while he's gone.

Also at some point during the three days he'll be piling up and burning the remaining crab carcasses since Randvi said it might attract predators.
