Search Requests


SEARCH REQUESTS



At game start, the map is completely unexplored and covered by a "fog of war" obscuring its features. New characters will be randomly dropped onto the island's shores; from there, to uncover tiles on the map and figure out more about where they are, search requests are required to document movement, attempt to uncover hidden materials and passages, discover or confront dangers, find old ruins and create new settlements, and potentially, solve puzzles related to the mystery of the island itself.


RULES AND GUIDELINES

  • Search requests are a required mechanic of this game. A search request for the current AC cycle must be submitted in order to pass AC without a strike.
  • Mistakes in search requests will never be penalized. Don't be afraid to eyeball a distance or make an approximate guess; if the math doesn't quite match up, or the path doesn't exist, I will offer alternate destinations and work with you in order to decide how the search request will resolve.
  • Search requests will rarely be immediately fatal. Unless your character is doing something intentionally reckless, I will do my best to offer paths of escape for any sudden dangers that arise.
  • You can be as precise or as vague as you want. If you want to exactly plot out the squares your character will travel through and search every IC day, that is totally fine. It's also fine to simply report that your character is staying in one place all month, or to give a starting point and a desired destination, with a general request to search a wide area. Just note that, the more vague you are in your request, the more I will extrapolate to fill in the blanks.
  • Retroactive/backdated search requests are allowed. They just can't be used for the current month's AC if they fall outside of the current month's AC period, or overwrite a previously submitted search request. Forward-dated search requests are also allowed as long as they fall within the same IC day that the request was posted (for example, if you post a search request on IC Day 30 morning, you can make that search request last for the entirety of IC day 30, not just the morning of).
  • Thoroughly searching a square, rather than just traveling through it, halves movement through that square. So if you choose to search every square along a path, you'll only travel half as far as someone moving with purpose to a destination. Remember that simply traveling through a square will still fully reveal it.
  • IC Days are split into three 8-hour increments. Each of these corresponds to one OOC day. Morning is from 4AM -> 11:59AM, Day is from 12PM -> 7:59PM, and Night is 8PM -> 3:59AM.
  • Several examples of search requests are provided below to help illustrate how they work. If you still have questions, please ask them in the FAQ (or in your search request!).

All new characters will be given a toplevel to this post. To submit a search request, fill out the below form and copy/paste it as a response to your toplevel.



IC DATES: The IC dates the search request covers (I would also recommend putting this in the subject line to make it easier to keyword search later). You can use whole days, partial days, or a combination of either. To verify what IC days line up with real-world days and events, consult the Calendar.

STARTING SQUARE: The square your character is starting their search request on, format TILE.COLUMN.ROW. This should line up with your previous search request, or your starting location if newly arrived/revived.

ENDING SQUARE: The square your character is ending their search request on. If you're not sure where they'll end up (the area is unexplored/your character has a vague idea of where they want to go/you're not sure on the math/etc.), you can give a more rough answer here. Something like "they want to make it to Tile II," or "as close to II.AA.3 as possible" are perfectly valid answers.

DETAILS: The meat of your request. This is where you describe:
  1. The path your character is taking,
  2. The squares you want them to search,
  3. Any special actions your character is taking during this period of time (or inaction), and
  4. Any other special notes or questions you might have about this request.
Again, you can provide as much or as little information as you want; saying that your character is simply moving from point A to point B without searching anything is 100% acceptable.

OOOOOF. Better stop to rest! He's going to probably try to find an out of the way spot to hide and sleep for a couple hours. Probably also somewhere to be sick. Hopefully he can find somewhere safe...ish.

He's also going to drink and splash his face some with water from the cooler. He'll text Jet and then just fight to stay conscious long enough to respond, if he gets a message back.

Day 6

IC DATES: Day 6 (morning, day, and night)
STARTING SQUARE: II.Q.25
ENDING SQUARE: II.EE.27
DETAILS: During the remaining morning time and into the day, she'll head back towards the middle of the jungle - moving cautiously and trying to stay hidden from archers and other potential attackers as she goes, but not searching thoroughly until she gets to unfamiliar territory (i.e. around II.Y.25). At that point, she'll return to her movement patterns and priorities from the day before. She'll also be keeping a close eye out for game, with the aim to try to catch something barehanded (kind of an insane goal, but she's been trained to be incredibly quick and quiet, and she thinks she'll have better luck utilizing those skills to just fuckin pounce on something than she would in trying to build a trap, which would be far more out of her wheelhouse). As always, nightfall will be when she'll start to search for a tree to sleep in.

DETAILS: Starting from the concrete structure, Jet will be moving (slowly with his injuries) towards where Lalo told him he's stopped moving. Though, he'll be keeping an eye out for a stick that looks big enough and strong enough to maybe use as a walking stick.

Well, hard to sleep with that going on. Jet will look around for something heavy enough or sturdy enough to maybe smash it with. If there isn't anything, though, he'll revert back to the turtle shell as long as it's able to withstand being a bludgeoning weapon (again).

After failing to get anywhere with the computer, he turns his attention to the destroyed drones. He'll set about trying to disassemble one of them using the tools he has on hand (the arrowhead, broken harpoon bolt, Martin's shiv, etc.) and just breaking shit where necessary. He's mainly trying to salvage the drugs they inject people with, and looking to see if there's any recognizable internal parts or still intact pieces that could potentially be useful, especially any kind of receiver or whatever else it seems to get its commands from. He's also noting the general age of everything – is this new-looking tech or retro? Does the drone itself seem relatively new or like it's been out in the jungle for years?

Well that's been a disappointment, but at least he learned something interesting re: bodies. Is there anything else that can be discerned from looking around? Are there personal belongings or bags or any electronics that may still be working, etc?

He won't pick the flowers, since what the hell, and continue east for three-four more hours. As usual he's wary of danger and keeping an eye out for anything resembling food, water or weapon.

After that he'll be looking for a place to stay the night again, either climbing a comfortable looking tree to hide again, or using some big palm leaves for a makeshift tent between the rocks, whichever is readily available.

For the rest of her awake time, Steph is going to look (within sight of the camp) for something that could realistically be used to boil water. A broken coconut would be perfect, but anything that can hold water and be heated without falling apart.

DETAILS: Starting the day with a little bit of green meat and a handful of rosehips, then Steph is trekking out with her spear and flimsy basket and a bit of meat stuffed in her pockets. She's following the stream trail to start, then following the second stream south a ways. Traveling for around 9 hours, keeping an eye out for forage, looking for anything that might be used to make a better basket or to boil water.

Time to pick himself up off the floor! He’ll drink a little water (like, a sip, he doesn’t have much) and turn his attention back to the lights.

He’ll get up on the toilet and attempt to unscrew the screws holding the LED lights in place, once again using his knife as an impromptu screwdriver. If that doesn’t work or the screws are too far to reach, he’ll attempt to pry the casing off (using the knife for leverage) or crack it open with the knife handle.

DETAILS: We continue the 'wait for water and resist the siren call of death' progression. Martin's doing nothing apart from responding to texts. He doesn't have the energy or thermoregulation to spare for much else.

Lalo will rest for a total of three hours. He'll sleep for two hours, then spend a third hour drinking some more water and just resting, waiting to see if Jet catches up with him before he's on the move again. He's going to be hesitant to eat anything though, lest that trigger another bout of sickness.

After three hours, since it'll be dark, he'll light himself another torch to see by and start moving towards the concrete structure. He'll move as fast as he can without hurting himself, considering his hindrances. If they haven't already found each other/met up yet, Lalo will text Jet to let him know he's on the move again and his trajectory, and he'll keep an eye out for Jet on the way there. Now rested, should Jet have failed to find an adequate walking stick, Lalo can serve as a bulwark to lean on while they walk back together. A staggery, limp-y bullwark, but he'll do the job.

If Jet catches up with Lalo well before the three hours' rest are up, Lalo will let Jet take the supplies and go on ahead without him. If Jet catches up to him near the end of the three hours, they'll leave together with the supplies and possibly share the load in carrying them.

He'll stop once he gets to the concrete structure with the supplies (and Jet).

Lalo will rest for three hours, waiting to see if Jet catches up to him in that time. If Jet catches up to him while Lalo rests, before the three hours are up, Lalo will let Jet take the supplies and head on ahead without him, then follow/catch up later.

If Jet still hasn't reached him after three hours, Lalo will start moving again and text Jet to let him know, keeping Jet informed of his general trajectory. If they're together, or if they meet up, he'll also let Jet lean on him for support it Jet needs to.
